Barstead, Docksteaders help DII Flames rout Whalers' B team

September 14, 2013  |  Lynchburg, Va.

Freshman forward Jordan Barstead scored his first goal in a Liberty uniform and added an assist in Friday night's 9-1 season-opening thrashing of the Hampton Roads Whalers at the LaHaye Ice Center.

Freshmen forwards Jordan Barstead and Devon Docksteader, both natives of Ottawa, Canada, enjoyed auspicious debuts for Liberty University's ACHA Division II men's hockey team in its season-opener against Hampton Roads' Junior "B" team, late Friday night at the LaHaye Ice Center.

Docksteader, younger brother of senior forward Brad Docksteader and Chad Docksteader, a junior forward on Liberty's DIII team, started the second-period scoring with his first goal in a Flames uniform. He later added an exclamation point to the 9-1 victory with the game's final score, unassisted.

Late in the second period, Barstead made it 5-0 with his first collegiate score, finishing a give-and-go pass from Jeff Boschman deep in the left crease seconds after making a steal. Senior forward Bobby Cervone extended Liberty's lead to 6-0 three minutes later by sneaking an unassisted wrist shot from the right circle through traffic and past Whalers' goalie Ryan Drucker.

"We saw production from three lines tonight, pretty evenly spread, which is consistent with the way we set the lines up," Liberty head coach Chris Lowes said. "We tried to balance them with a bit of playmaking, a bit of scoring touch, and a bit of toughness. We'll probably make a few adjustments (Saturday), but for the first game, chemistry was pretty good."

Barstead and Boschman connected again six minutes into the third period, this time with Barstead setting up Boschman to give the Flames a commanding 8-1 advantage less than three minutes after the Whalers had trimmed it to 6-1.

"Jeff (Boschman) is playing well and we're looking for big things from him this year and we just told him that before the game, we expect the production to go up," Lowes said. "He's got the size and the hands and the playmaking ability."

Peter Kazmierczak opened the scoring just a minute and six seconds into the first period off a feed from Brad Docksteader, Liberty's leading scorer last year who finished with a goal and two assists.

He set up a sophomore forward Paul Ingles with a crisp pass from the right to left circle. Ingles, who played on the DI team as a freshman last year, put the puck away for a 3-0 edge with just 12 seconds left in the first period.

The Flames outshot the Whalers by a whopping 46-14 margin on the night, with sophomore goalie Nick Devine making 13 saves. Liberty will look to put together another dominating performance in Saturday's rematch at LaHaye, set for 6:15 p.m.
