Flames win CFA Rail Jam; Snowflex to host Big Air Saturday

March 30, 2013  |  Lynchburg, Va.

Jesse Spadino competes at a USCSA Slopestyle event held at the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre in February. He placed second among men's snowboarders in Saturday's CFA Rail Jam.

Liberty University's ski and snowboard team hosted a Collegiate Freestyle Association rail jam, the first of four CFA competitions at the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, under picture-perfect conditions Saturday afternoon.

Riders took five runs, choosing from four rail features on each one, with the top two scores counting toward their point total.

Liberty won both the men's and women's snowboard team competitions, taking first, second, and fourth place as well as the sixth through 11th positions out of 21 riders in the men's event.

The Lady Flames' only participant, Brandy Fronte, finished first out of three competitors in the women's rail jam, executing a front-side 180-on, switch-back 180-out on her first run before doing a 50-50 on the downrail.

Kevin Hoff won the men's snowboard competition with a combined score of 42. On his first run, he performed a front-180, switchback 360-out on the shotgun rail before doing a front-180 switchback 180 out on his second scored run.

Jesse Spadino took second place with a total of 40 points, landing a perfect 270-out on the shotgun rail before performing a front one-on tail thread back switch back 180-out.

Isaac Gibson placed fourth overall with 37 points, executing a 50-50 front 360 on the shotgun rail before landing a 270 on the downrail.

Both Liberty's men's and women's snowboard teams edged out runner-up North Carolina and third-place Maryland with George Mason, Duke, Virginia Tech, and Penn State finishing fourth through seventh in the men's event.

"They rode great and everybody had a good time," Liberty head coach Will Scheren said. "We use the CFA events to grow the riders, see who's going to be on the USCSA team next year. The people that showed up from the other schools learned a lot of tricks and got better. Hopefully, they'll make the CFA series a little more competitive."

All four events in the CFA series (including this Saturday's Big Air competition, a Slopestyle event April 13, and Big Air/Slopestyle finale on April 20) are scored equally, with the top three counting toward the individual series standings.

"You're allowed to miss an event," Scheren said. "Because it was Easter weekend, we only had around 30 riders, about a half to a third of what we‘re expecting next time."

Liberty didn't have an entry in the men's skiing event, with Tim Steltzer taking the first CFA competition off, and its top female snowboarder, Eden Jones, not available due to an injury she suffered following her fourth-place finish at the USCSA national championships last month in Idaho.

"Tim will be back for the last three events," Scheren said. "Eden's still hurt, and hobbling around."

Complete results from Saturday's event are available on the CFA website, which also features a highlight video narrated by Scheren with all of the scoring runs.

"I'm excited about the CFA doing a lot of video work, to be able to illustrate what it is and how people can benefit from riding here," he said, noting next year there will be a fall season to complement the spring season. "We're hoping to grow the league nationally, but we've got to get a couple good years in the Southeast first."
