Liberty University's synchronized skating team achieved its highest score in program history in front of International Judging System (IJS) judges on Nov. 10 at the Central Carolina Synchro Classic in Hillsborough, N.C. This past Saturday, the Lady Flames traveled to Michigan for the first of three times this season to compete in the Kalamazoo Kickoff, where the team earned pewter medals for their fourth-place finish.

The Lady Flames received a score of 51.30 as the only Collegiate team skating in North Carolina before performing a clean skate at Kalamazoo, Mich., to place behind Western Michigan, Adrian, and Illinois in the Collegiate Division with a score of 43.64. (Michigan and Notre Dame withdrew from the competition.)

"Assistant Coach Emily Halvorson and I were proud of the girls' performances over the last two weekends," Liberty Head Coach Tatiana Payne said. "Critiques from the judges regarding our program have been mostly positive and they have all had nice things to say about the choreography. Both skates have created a good starting place and building block for the remainder of our season."

Payne has high expectations for the team as it prepares to return to Michigan to compete in the Dec. 1-2 Dr. Porter Synchronized Skating Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"This year, we have strategically scheduled most of our competitions in the Midwest," she said. "The majority of strong teams at the collegiate division can be found there and the judging standard is much more challenging. We plan to focus on bringing our technical score up and doing whatever we can to get more elements called at the level we are aiming for."

The Lady Flames will have one more competition in the spring semester, the Feb. 1-2 Eastern Synchro Skating Sectional Championships, to fine-tune their program for a second appearance in the U.S. Synchronized Skating Collegiate National Championships, set for March 1-2 in Plymouth, Mich.

"We know we can improve from here and increase our scores throughout the remainder of our competitions," Payne said. "Overall, we feel like we are on a steady path to have our most successful season to date."
