Virginia Tech halts Flames' streak
November 2, 2012 | Roanoke, Va.
A seven-game win streak for the Flames Division II men's hockey team snapped as Virginia Tech iced a 5-3 win at the Roanoke Civic Center Friday night.
Liberty University fell behind in the first frame as Hokies forward Mitch Clark scored the period's lone goal.
In the second period, John Cotton found the equalizer for the Flames, but Michael Horn would score for Tech to lock a 2-1 lead going into the break.
Cotton tied it up again in the third period, and that was as close as Liberty would get as back-to-back Hokie goals by Greg Kubrak and Zack Walz gave the home team a 4-2 advantage. Brad Docksteader brought the Flames within one, but as time expired Liberty was unable to erase the deficit. Virginia Tech's Alex Hashmi would score on an empty net to round out the scoring.
In goal, Nick Devine took the loss for the Flames.
Liberty will have a shot at revenge on friendly ice as the second part of the home-and-home series wraps up Saturday afternoon in the LaHaye Ice Center. Puck drops at 3 p.m.
