Volleyball opens season at Virginia Tech
October 6, 2012 | Blacksburg, Va.
The Liberty Flames men's volleyball team kicked off the 2012-13 season with three matches at Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 6. Though Liberty managed to push two of the matches to a decisive third set, the Flames were unable to come away with a victory.
The men played well in the first match against the host school, but the Hokies were able to gut out a 2-1 victory (21-25, 25-19, 15-12) at War Memorial Gymnasium.
Liberty took on a team of alumni from Virginia Tech later in the day, with the Hokies again coming out on top, this time 2-0 (25-21, 23-25).
Liberty closed out the day with a match against JMU, with the Dukes coming out on top 2-1 (25-23, 9-25, 15-13).
"The team is much better than last year and the fact that we were competitive with nationally ranked teams (JMU and Va. Tech) said a lot about our improvements," said Bryan Rigg, Flames head coach. "Hopefully some minor adjustments and more practice will help us win close games instead of lose close games."
The Flames will have a couple weeks off before their next matchup on Nov. 3 when they take on the University of North Carolina at 9 a.m. Location is TBD.
