October 6, 2012 | Pittsburgh, Pa.
Seniors Connor Houston and Austin Jones finished third in the men's pair to highlight the Liberty University crew team as it launched its 2012-13 season at the Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Oct. 6, presented by Allegheny Sports Medicine. It was Liberty's first appearance at the race, which included several NCAA programs.
Jones and Houston finished the course in 18 minutes, 56.71 seconds, just behind Carnegie-Mellon University.
Houston later placed 10th in the men's single, finishing the river course in 23:07.42.
The varsity women's four kicked off its season well as Arielle Ross, Lindsey Churchill, Abigail Lenz, Kylie Peterson, and coxswain Anna Hickman finished 10th in a deep 28-boat field for the women's open four, finishing in a time of 17 minutes, 36.75 seconds, beating NCAA boats from Dayton University, Marietta College, and West Virginia University.
The men's lightweight four of Joel Buckhalt, John Showalter, Jonathan Turner, and Mitchell Dieudonne, with coxswain Sarah Morris, finished fifth in 17:00.20.
The novice boats had a solid first race, with the men's novice eight finishing sixth, the women's novice eight taking seventh, and the women's novice four at fourth.
"It was overall a great day to get some racing experience under the belt of the team," said Ryan Hurley, first-year Flames head coach. "Head of the Ohio offered some very tough competition that I specifically chose so we could enter the ring with programs that we will be setting our sights on as we grow."
The competition does not get any easier as the varsity women's four is next headed to the prestigious 48th annual Head of the Charles Regatta Oct. 20 in Cambridge, Mass., before the entire team heads to Chattanooga, Tenn., to race in the second largest crew race in the country, the Head of the Hooch Regatta on the Chattahoochee River Nov. 3.
