Lady Flames sweep Selects
October 7, 2012 | Lynchburg, Va.
The Liberty Division I women's hockey team held off a furious rally by the Tri-City Selects of Raleigh, N.C., to claim a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon and complete a two game sweep over the Selects at the LaHaye Ice Center.
Liberty got things started 90 seconds into the first period as senior Stacy McCombe scored off a pass from freshman Jenny MacArthur to put the Lady Flames up 1-0. Neither team broke through again until the second when Tri-City's Kristy Knight scored on a breakaway to knot the score at 1.
Both teams had numerous chances to take the lead throughout the contest, but it was Sarah Stevenson, on a pass from McCombe, who was able to slip one past Tri-City netminder Kelsey Neumann that finally gave Liberty the winning edge midway through the third period.
The Selects attacked furiously, even pulling their goaltender with a minute to go, but were not able to find the equalizer.
Freshman Kristina Toppazzini played all 60 in net for Liberty, making 29 saves to garner her first career win, while Neumann, outside of the two goals, was equally up to the challenge, making 51 saves for the Selects.
The Lady Flames get four days before returning to action in Burlington, Vt., kicking off a three game New England road trip with the first of two against the Catamounts from the University of Vermont on Thursday, Oct. 11. Game time is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. in the Central Vermont Civic Center in nearby Montpelier.
