Liberty concludes season at SELC Championships
April 30, 2012 | Lynchburg, VA
Kyle McQuillan, head coach for Liberty's men's lacrosse team and a former Liberty player, was named the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) Coach of the Year during the championships held in Atlanta, Ga., this past weekend.
The Flames made it to the semifinal round, losing in a close match to Elon University 13-12.
"To know that we are right there (with Elon) in only year two is a great sign," said McQuillan.
Liberty faced off with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in the quarterfinals, a week after their regularly scheduled game was cancelled due to weather in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Will Perkins had four goals and leading scorer Kurt Tobias added a pair as the Flames rallied from being down four in the first half to knock off the top-seeded Chants 11-9.
The Flames next faced the Phoenix of Elon University, who had defeated Liberty 12-11 to close out the regular season. After falling behind 13-7 in the first three quarters, The Flames outscored Elon 5-0 in the final period, but the Phoenix held on to defeat Liberty 13-12. Elon would go on to defeat Kennesaw State in the championship game.
McQuillan was honored following the tournament, along with eight Liberty players who were named to the all-conference team. Tobias, Perkins, Nate Lowmaster, Mike Zumpano and Travis Briggs were all named to the first team, while Derek Haywood was named to the second team. Andrew Walter and Jarrett Chambers earned honorable mentions.
