Moore and Beaty lead Flames at Liberty Invitational

Thea Beaty had a banner debut, taking first place in Women's Collegiate Singles Division 3, and teaming with Abigail Lindsey to win Women's Collegiate Doubles Women Division 3 at the Liberty Invitational Tournament at the Sports Racket Sept. 28-30.

The tournament kicked off the 2012-13 season for Liberty Flames racquetball team, the first for women's racquetball.

Jordan Kemp led the way for the men's team taking third place in Men's Collegiate Singles Division 2 Olympic Format Gold, and teaming with Ryan Evans to place first in the Men's Collegiate Doubles Men Division 1/2 Red.

Ryan Moore opened the weekend with a straight sets win over Zackary Brown from Duke University 15-3, 15-4. Teammate Sam Montgomery was also in #4 singles, but he lost his first match to Andrew Jimenez from the University of Maryland 15-14, 15-13. Moore competed against Jimenez and won 15-5, 15-10 to take third place in Men's Collegiate Singles Division 4 Gold.  Montgomery moved to the red division where he faced off with Brown, winning 15-2,15-1 to take first place in Men's Collegiate Singles Division 4 Red championship.

Evans and Kemp competed in the Men's Collegiate Singles Division 2, with Evans losing in his first match to Patrick Litten of Virginia 9-15, 15-5, 11-6. Kemp won his first match 15-5, 15-6 over Jordan Forte of Duke before falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Brij Kachalia of N.C. State 15-11, and 15-4. Kemp would win third place, defeating Litten, who lost in the semifinals to Bradley Williams, 15-9, 15-4. Evans moved to the red division where he placed second, falling in the final to Forte 15-13, 4-15,11-5.

Kemp and Evans lost their quarterfinal doubles match to Bradley Williams and Brij Kachalia of North Carolina 15-4, 15-10 while Joel Denney teamed with Shawn Furman and knocked off Trevor Buck and Francisco Flores of Virginia Tech 7-15, 15-7, 11-10. Denney and Furman would go on to fall in the finals to Jordan Matthews and Srinivas Iyengar of North Carolina 8-15, 15-9, 11-3. Kemp and Evans would defeat Jeffrey Doyle and Jordan Forte of Duke University in the red division final 7-15, 15-9, 11-0.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Furman fell in the quarterfinals of the Men's Collegiate Singles Division 1 Gold to eventual champion Jordan Matthews of N.C. State 15-12, 15-4. Furman would roll through the Men's Collegiate Singles Division 1 Red taking second place, losing in the finals to Iyengar 15-10, 11-15, 11-10.

Graduate student Jonathan Davis and Kenneth Judkins both won their first match Men's Collegiate Singles Division 3, Davis winning 15-3, 15-9 over Ryan Bartoshuk of Duke, and Judkins over Robert Amanfu of Virginia 15-6, 15-2. Davis lost his quarterfinal match to eventual champion Matthew Zizzi of N.C. State 15-4, 15-5, while Judkins lost to Adam Blackwell of N.C. State 15-4, 15-0. Judkins and Davis would meet in the Men's Collegiate Singles Division 3 Red, with Judkins getting the better of his teammate in three games 15-10, 8-15, 11-8.

Beaty, competing in her first collegiate racquetball tournament, upset No. 1 seed Chelsea Bowman of N.C. State in the semifinals 15-3, 15-13, before defeating No. 2 seed Dorothy Harris, also of N.C. State 10-15, 15-3, 11-4.

Teammate Abigail Lindsey knocked off Michelle Ngo of N.C. State 15-11, 15-9 in the semifinals at Women's Collegiate Singles Division 4 before falling in the finals to Kristen Blanton of N.C. State 15-4, 15-6.

Lindsey and Beaty teamed up to defeat Bowman and Harris by identical 15-11 scores in the semifinals of Women's Collegiate Doubles Division 3 before defeating Ngo and Blanton in the finals 15-6, 15-6.

Liberty will be in action next at the MACRC Maryland Open hosted by the University of Maryland October 26-28 in College Park, Md.
