DII Flames swept by Knights
September 15, 2012 | Lynchburg, Va.
Neal Henderson had a goal and DJ Dinnison had a pair of assists, but the Liberty Flames Division II hockey team was swept for the first time as they fell 6-2 to the Atlanta Jr. B Knights on Saturday afternoon.
Henderson got things started midway through the first period as he took a feed from Dinnison on the power play and beat Knights starter Lucas Thurston to the blocker side to put Liberty up 1-0. Just 43 seconds later John Cotton slammed on past Thurston on a rebound from a Dinnison shot and Liberty was up 2-0. Thurston was immediately pulled in favor of Sean Davis, the starter on Friday night, and he did not allow a goal the rest of the period.
The Knights got on the board early in the second as Bradley Harley took a Jon Gibson pass and beat Flames goalie Nick Devine to cut the deficit to 2-1. Three minutes later, Christopher Santa Maria scored his third goal of the weekend to tie the game at 2. He added another early on in the third period, beating Flames goalie Trenton MacDonald, who had come on to relieve Devine to start the final period, to give Atlanta the lead 3-2.
Nick Elliot increased the lead to two goals on a breakaway just two minutes later. Jack Trischett stuffed a rebound from MacDonald to up the lead to 5-2. Zachary Egan closed the scoring with his first goal of the weekend on the power play with just under two minutes remaining.
Davis picked up the win, stopping 11 Flames shots and not allowing a goal over the final 49 minutes of play. MacDonald gave up 4 goals but made 7 saves in relief.
"This is a young team," said head coach Chris Lowes, "but we have to chalk weekends like this up as a learning experience and get to work on the next opponent."
Liberty will continue its season-opening, six-game homestand as the Duke Blue Devils come to town next Saturday night for a 6 p.m. contest at the LaHaye Ice Center.
