Flames DII team drops decision to Knights

Brandon Cox scored a pair of goals, but Liberty was done in by its defense as the Division II Flames fell 7-4 to the Atlanta Jr. B Knights on Friday night at the LaHaye Ice Center.
Caleb Allison. The Knights quickly found the equalizer as Kienan Fenton snuck one past Flames starter Justin Gortman a minute later. Christopher Santa Maria navigated his way through the Flames defense and gave the Knights the lead with five and a half minutes to go in the period, but two minutes later, Clinton Nigh converted on the Flames' second power play of the night to knot the score at 2. Cale Massa finished off a power play breakaway to give Atlanta the lead once again late in the first period.
After a scoreless but very physical second period, which saw seven penalties handed out, the Knights were able to push their lead to two goals on a power play finish by Se Kim just 22 seconds into the period. Allison scored 2 minutes later to bring the Flames within one as Cox returned the favor on the fifth total power play goal of the night. Cole Stallard pushed the lead back to two 43 seconds later on a rebound. Drew Muir pulled the Flames within one again, but Santa Maria scored and Kim stashed an empty net goal to put the game away with just over 30 seconds to go.
Gortman played the first two periods in net, stopping 19 shots. Trenton MacDonald came on in the third and made 7 saves. Sean Davis played all 60 minutes in goal for the Knights to earn the victory.
Liberty will look to forge a split of the two-game set on Saturday afternoon when the two teams finish their doubleheader. Faceoff is set for 2:45 p.m. at the LaHaye Ice Center.
