Mark Furler: Assistant Coach/Varsity Men’s Coach
Mark Furler, a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), is returning to the Liberty rowing program as an Assistant Coach/Varsity Men’s Coach for the 2012-13 season. After founding the program and serving at the helm as Head coach and since the 2008-09 school year, he has elected to begin the process of passing the torch off to promote the growth of the team and its staff to full time positions, as he still pursues career ambitions with AREVA Inc. based in Lynchburg, VA.
Before stepping down from head coach, Mark transformed the team from a group of 10 interested students with virtually no rowing experience and an old 1980’s Kascpher to a program which has a roster size of nearly 50 student athletes and can be seen traveling to regattas up and down the eastern seaboard.
During this time Liberty Crew saw itself start from the bottom, competing with only a novice squad and simply trying to stay competitive at the local level. Eventually competing at major regattas such as Head of the Charles, bringing both Men’s and Women’s crews. His crews went on to achieve an overall/team 2nd place at Head of the South in 2011, and that spring also take the ACRA National Championship in the Women’s Lightweight four at the conclusion of the 2012 season, along with a respectable finish by the Men’s Varsity four.
Prior to his move to Lynchburg, VA, Mark rowed with the Rensselaer program, picking up rowing during his sophomore year. While rowing at Rensselaer, Mark rowed both as a port and starboard of the Varsity 8. In addition to the on water experiences gained as a rower he learned many fundamentals about the running of a club program while serving on the executive board of the team, contributing primarily as the Boathouse Captain.
