I began playing disc golf during my last year of college as a student at Liberty in 2007. One of my co-workers asked me if I had ever played disc golf and when he discovered I had not we were out at Peaks View Park (a well-known local course to the Lynchburg area) before the end of the day. After the first time I played, even though I did not understand the mechanics or have great success at this new sport, I was hooked. After playing casually for a year or so I began to meet other local players that helped teach me new techniques and skills that elevated my game to a new level. I won my first tournament as an Amateur in 2009 and have won several events ranging from small club tournaments to PDGA sanctioned tournaments. My wife Mary and I have been married 5 years and live in Appomattox, VA, where I get the chance to play my home course at Elk Creek Park and hone my skills on a tightly wooded course. I have also had the opportunity to play at over 20 courses in Virginia, and have travelled to play many courses in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania.
Disc golf is a huge part of my life not only because I love the sport, but more importantly I love the opportunity to meet new people and connect with them. When at local courses it gives me a chance to strike up conversation with strangers and teach them about the sport. The community of players in this sport are amazing, and they have a spirit of service and giving back. I have met many of my best friends while playing disc golf. Getting the chance to represent Liberty and Christ through disc golf is something I could have never imagined. To get a chance to share my faith and my love for the sport all in one conversation is very exciting and no longer uncommon. It is important to give back and invest my time into new players, as others did for me when I needed guidance and instruction.
In 2007 I became a Liberty alumnus with the completion of my Bachelors of Science in Communication Studies- Public Relations, and I am currently working toward completion of a Masters of Arts in Management and Leadership. Currently I work for Liberty University Online’ s Academic Advising department in a supervisory role. My life has been blessed a great deal by Liberty, and it has helped my faith and Christian walk grow and be fruitful.
My desire as a coach is to help develop our player’s skills and a deep rooted love for the sport, as well as a Christ-like love for the people they will be able to minister to through being on this team. As a player my goal is to help establish our program within the collegiate disc golf community as one of excellence, and individually to achieve All American honors.
