Telephone Calls: Why doesn’t the coach call me back?

The NCAA has many rules and regulations when it comes to phone calls and recruiting. Don’t get discouraged if a coach doesn’t call you or your parents back. He/she may actually not be permitted to do so.

In all sports other than football and women's basketball, one telephone call to a prospect or a prospect's relatives or legal guardians may be made during March of the prospect's junior year in high school. In sports other than football and basketball, subsequent telephone calls to a prospect [or the prospect's relatives or legal guardian(s)] may not be made before July 1 following the completion of the prospect's junior year in high school (subject to the exceptions below); thereafter, staff members shall not make such telephone calls more than once per week.

In Divisions I-A and I-AA football, one telephone call to a prospect [or a prospect's relatives or legal guardian(s)] may be made during the month of May of the prospect's junior year in high school. Additional telephone calls to a prospect [or a prospect's relatives or legal guardian(s)] may not be made before September 1 of the beginning of the prospect's senior year in high school; thereafter, such telephone contact is limited to once per week outside of a contact period. During a contact period, such telephone contact may be made at the institution's discretion.

In men's basketball, an institution is permitted to make one telephone call per month to a prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s)] on or after June 15 of the prospect's sophomore year in high school through July 31 of the prospect's junior year in high school. Ann institution is permitted to make two telephone calls to a prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s)] beginning August 1 prior to the prospect's senior year in high school. An institution is permitted to make one telephone call per week to a two-year college prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s).

In women's basketball, one telephone call to a prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s)] may be made during each of the months of April and May of the prospect's junior year in high school. One call may be made on or after June 1 through June 20 and one call may be made be made on or after June 21 through June 30 of the prospect's junior year in high school. In addition, only three telephone calls to a prospect [or the prospect's parents or legal guardian(s)] may be made during the month of July following the prospect's junior year in high school, with no more than one telephone call per week; thereafter, staff members shall not make such telephone calls more than once per week. An institution may not have any additional communication with the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of a prospective student-athlete who also serves on the staff of their daughter's nonscholastic team. It is permissible for an institution to contact a parent/legal guardian of a prospective student-athlete who also serves as a head coach of his or her daughter's scholastic team.

Exceptions:

Institutional staff members may receive telephone calls placed by a prospect at the prospect's own expense at any time, including before July 1 following the prospect's junior year in high school.

Institutional staff members may make unlimited telephone calls to a prospect during the five days immediately preceding the prospect's official visit to that institution.

Institutional staff members may make unlimited telephone calls to a prospect on the initial date for the signing of the National Letter of Intent and during the two days immediately following the initial signing date.

In the sport of football, institutional staff members may make unlimited telephone calls to prospects during the period 48 hours before and 48 hours after 7 a.m. on the initial signing date for the National Letter of Intent.

Subsequent to the calendar day on which a prospect signs a National Letter of Intent, there shall be no limit on the number of telephone calls by the institution with which the prospect has signed.

Interested in Transferring to Liberty University?

If you are interested in transferring to Liberty University and you are presently attending a NCAA or NAIA four-year institution, you must first obtain an official release or permission to contact from its athletics department. This release or permission to contact must be sent to the Liberty University compliance department before any member of our athletics staff is permitted to discuss the possibility of your transfer to our institution.

If you presently attending a 2-year college you did not need to provide us with this release or permission to contact.

Your academic and athletic history at your previous institution(s) will determine the transfer requirements you will need to meet in order to be eligible for financial aid; athletics competition; and/or practice. Please review the NCAA Transfer Guide to make sure you meet the requirements related to your transfer.
