Senior Nicole Hofmeister earned a silver medal in junior ladies free skating to highlight Liberty's performance in the Eastern Intercollegiate figure skating competition at the LaHaye Ice Center Oct. 12-14. The Lady Flames figure skating team finished 8th overall.
More than 120 skaters from 14 colleges competed, representing Duke University, Penn State University, Cornell University, Boston University, Johns Hopkins University, East Carolina University, Fordham University, Northeastern University, Sacred Heart University, Towson University, New York University, Dartmouth College (who won the team competition), and the University of Delaware.
Hofmeister was the only individual medal winner for Liberty and the team of sophomore Katie Scuilla, and freshmen Jenn Goette, Kelsey Rieschl, and Amanda Delphia finished second in the low team maneuvers category, claiming silver and the Lady Flames' only team medal of the event. Scuilla also finished fourth in preliminary solo dance.
Freshman Fantasia Remonvil finished fourth in the novice ladies short program category.
"Overall the competition was a great experience for our freshmen skaters," said Tatiana Payne, Lady Flames head coach. "All who took part seemed to have had a wonderful time and we plan to do even better next time."
The Lady Flames' next competition is March 17, 2013 at the University of Delaware.
