As the landscape of advanced practice nursing changes, Liberty University is poised to help you take advantage of new opportunities with its Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): Family Nurse Practitioner. Nurses in this program learn to translate evidence-based research into practice to improve patient safety and quality of care. They also develop the ability to lead interprofessional teams driving innovations to improve health care, systems, and policies through classes taught from a Christian worldview.

CCNE Accreditation

Students must take residential courses at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, and complete their practicum hours in Virginia.

Admissions Requirements

  • Official College Transcripts (must be mailed directly from your college to Liberty University in an official, sealed envelope or sent via an official electronic sending service such as E-Script, Parchment, National Clearinghouse, etc. to
    • If you would like for Liberty University to request that your college transcripts be submitted and do not have a current balance at your university, please complete the Transcript Request Form (for domestic students only).
    • Transcripts must include either a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing.
    • GPA of 3.0 in most recent nursing degree.
  • Program Prerequisites:
    • Undergraduate statistics course
    • Undergraduate research methods course
    • Undergraduate health assessment course. (A graduate-level health assessment course can be accepted in lieu of an undergraduate course.)
  • Current, unencumbered RN license. Applicant must hold RN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Please submit a copy of your license to (If a past sanction or disciplinary action exists on a professional license, the applicant may be contacted by the Nursing Admissions Review Committee for further explanation.) 
    • (If applicable) Advanced practice license and associated professional certification. Current, unencumbered APRN license issued in one of the fifty United States (if applicable). Please submit a copy of your license and certification to  (If a past sanction or disciplinary action exists on a professional license, the applicant may be contacted by the Nursing Admissions Review Committee for further explanation.) 
    • (If applicable)  Clinical APRN Education: advanced practice nurses are required to have the advanced practice core. Graduate transcripts must reflect that the applicants have successfully passed a graduate level health assessment, graduate level pathophysiology, and a graduate level pharmacology.
    • Applicants are not required to have an advanced practice license or certification for the Post-BSN DNP/FNP pathway. However, if an applicant is currently licensed in another advanced practice nursing specialty (i.e. Clinical Nurse Specialist), applicants must submit APRN license and certification. 
  • Two years professional nursing experience. Applicants will provide consent for Liberty University's DNP Program to contact most recent employers to verify two years of professional nursing experience. The consent form should be located in the CV template.

After reviewing applicants, the School of Nursing will contact selected applicants for an interview.

If an acceptance offer is extended to an applicant, there will be additional supplemental steps needed upon final acceptance to remain enrolled in the DNP program. This includes purchasing a background check, FBI fingerprinting, drug screen, and compliance package through CastleBranch. Which also includes compliance issues such as completion of immunizations/physical examination, and Ability to meet Essential Attributes Requirements.
