The Master of Arts in English is a 36-hour, graduate-level degree in English language and literature. The purpose of the program is to equip students, within a Christian, biblical worldview, to pursue further studies in English language arts at the doctoral level, as well as to prepare for careers related to the field. The M.A. in English provides students with the opportunity to study the texts of literature in English and the western tradition, the critical tradition pertaining to these texts, and critical approaches to interpreting texts, as well as a background in research methods and the practice of writing and in the linguistic characteristics of English throughout its history, offered in advanced degree programs in English.


Admissions Requirements

  • $50 application fee (beginning Fall 2016, the application fee will be deferred and assessed during Financial Check-In)
  • Unofficial college transcripts with a completed Transcript Request Form. An official final college transcript showing a completed Bachelor’s degree is required before first semester enrollment.
    • Regionally or nationally accredited Bachelor’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA for admission in good standing (admission on caution is on a case-by-case basis)
  • Recommender Contact Information (for two academic references; complete through provided link)
  • Research Paper/Writing Sample (8-10 pages)
  • Statement of Purpose  - The Statement of Purpose is a one-page paper that discusses your goals for your intended academic program, as well as, an explanation of what you hope to gain from and contribute to the program.
  • Self-Certification Form (for students in the final term of their bachelor's degree)
  • Prerequisites (should be taken prior to admission): 15 -18 credit hours of 300 - 400 upper-level undergraduate English courses
  • Current Liberty undergraduate students seeking preliminary acceptance into a graduate program must complete a Graduation Application through their ASIST Account.
