Pilot Studies

A pilot study is a smaller-scale version of a research study. Pilot studies are conducted to determine whether full-scale research studies will result in the desired data.

Researchers planning to conduct pilot studies that will involve human subjects will need to complete and submit research applications for their pilot studies to the IRB for review and approval. Pilot studies should be labeled as such on the IRB application. Participant recruitment and data collection for pilot studies may not begin until after the researcher has received IRB approval.
