LU Safe Ride Program

Liberty University Police Department (LUPD) offers a service in which anyone may call LUPD Dispatch at 434-592-7641 twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and request that LUPD send an Officer to their location and escort them from one area of campus to another. This is done in the interest of maintaining the highest level of safety for the University Community. Please bear in mind that LUPD is not a medical transport agency. This means that LUPD will NOT transport individuals to the hospital under any circumstances.

Calls for the utilization of this service are answered in the order in which they are received and response times are based on different variables that are impossible to predict. An escort does not equate a ride, a multi-stop tour, or a taxi service. Officers are well within their purview to perform personal escorts on foot.  This service is designed for use by those who feel it would be unsafe for them to walk alone or in a certain area. When LU Transit services are in operation, an escort should be requested only in extenuating circumstances.

Individuals requesting to utilize this service must provide their name, student ID, the names and IDs of any other individual included in the escort, as well as the beginning and ending destinations to the LUPD Dispatcher upon request. Further, a Police Officer providing an escort may ask for a state issued I.D. at their discretion. Failure to provide any requested information will result in the denial of the individual to utilize the service.

LUPD Personnel providing this service may, at their discretion, end the service at any time deemed necessary. Further, LUPD Personnel providing this service may deny the service at any time. Should an escort be prematurely ended or denied by any LUPD Personnel, a report fully documenting and articulating the reason for this action will be completed as soon as possible. (LUPD Personnel’s opinion that an individual should feel safe in a particular situation shall never be deemed adequate justification for denial)
