Leaders agree to cut off enrollment again this fall

July 7, 2009 : University Advancement staff

With the fall semester quickly approaching, Liberty University is closing out residential enrollment for the second consecutive year. Last fall was the first time the school had placed students on a waiting list.

The deadline for the Fall 2009 semester is July 15. Applicants who have not completed enrollment by this date will be placed on a waiting list and will be notified by July 31 regarding eligibility for the fall.

Liberty expects to attain record enrollment this fall, with an estimated 11,500 students (including 3,900 new students).

Because of the growth of the university — with an expected 7,600 returning students and 3,900 new undergraduate and graduate students this fall — university leaders felt the need to set the closing date. Like last year, the enrollment cutoff will continue to allow for facilities and staffing to catch up with the current growth and for the administration to make plans for future growth.

Leaders see this move as a positive sign that Liberty is standing true to its mission to Train Champions for Christ.

Chris Johnson, vice president of Enrollment Management for Liberty, said the numbers are “right on target” and that setting an enrollment deadline was a positive step.

“From a university standpoint, we don’t need to be a second, third, fourth choice out there,” he said. “We’re moving in a direction where we are becoming the first choice for parents who want to send their students to a place where they are going to get a solid, Christian education.”

Johnson said closing enrollment will help internal operations (housing, facilities management, hiring of faculty/staff) and recruitment efforts as more and more parents and prospective students hear what the university has to offer.

Students who complete Financial Check-In (the final stage in the enrollment process) prior to July 15 are guaranteed enrollment; however, those who have only submitted confirmation deposits will be placed on a waiting list after July 15. Those on the waiting list will receive notification of their status by July 31.
