Parking policy refined

Liberty University has modified its on-campus parking policy to offer staff the same fee-based premium parking it offers faculty members.

Faculty members were afforded that opportunity the last couple of years for an annual fee of $50. Staff can reserve premium parking for a similar fee.

Under the new policy, staff members will be allowed to park in the same lots as faculty. A previous parking policy statement said staff would compete for spaces with commuter students.

A policy statement issued last week when Liberty's President and Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. was out of town indicated that staff members would have to pay between $50 and $150 to park in the same lots as commuter students.

Falwell said he modified the parking policy after a further review.

He said no staff member will be required to pay the fee. Satellite parking lots will be located on and off the main academic campus and employees will be able to ride buses to their places of employment.

“With changes being made on campus, we have a large number of academic classes that will not be held in Green Hall this year,” said Liberty Chancellor and President Jerry Falwell Jr. “We should need fewer spaces here for faculty and student parking.”

Liberty faculty, staff and students will no longer use Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty Christian Academy lots. Over the summer, the university constructed more than 300 new parking spaces near Green Hall that can be used for premium parking.

The university also was able to reduce traffic flow to and from Green Hall, which essentially becomes the university’s operations center for support staff. Because of the reduction of academic classes in Green Hall, student trips have been trimmed from 24,000 a month to 7,000.

Liberty is working toward making its main campus a primarily pedestrian campus over the next several years.
