DecembeRadio delivered a powerful two-song Christian rock set at Liberty University’s convocation service on Monday. The band’s first self-titled album with Slanted Records was nominated for “Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album” at the 49th Grammy Awards and also won a 2007 Dove Award for “Rock Album of the Year.”

The largest-ever incoming class at Liberty University (now surpassing 3,700) meant standing room only for the first convocation service of the fall 2008 semester Wednesday morning. Campus pastor Johnnie Moore announced that, for the first time, they had outgrown the Vines Center, where three convocation services are held each week.

The Vines Center hosts some of the most exciting Christian speakers, musicians, and sporting events in the country – but a strong sound reverberation was making it difficult for students to hear from some of the seats. Newly installed “sound baffles” are expected to make reverberation a thing of the past, though. The baffles, which look like red and blue flags hanging from the dome ceiling, will absorb excess sound.

Youth Evangelist and author Tony Nolan shared his life testimony with Liberty University students at Monday’s convocation service. Most recently, Nolan has been the tour pastor for top Christian band Casting Crowns, where he has seen thousands pray to receive Christ during concerts.

Matt Holman enlivened Liberty’s last Friday convocation of the semester as he spoke about never “crying uncle” but pressing on and holding onto the hope that a relationship with Jesus Christ can bring. Holman, lead pastor at Landmark Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, is known for being an animated and witty speaker.

Army Master Sergeant Rodney Whaley, a Liberty University Distance Learning professor, shared his first-time experience in the 2008 Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race in Alaska at Monday’s convocation service. Rodney Whaley, of Franklin, Tenn., was the first Tennessean to enter the Iditarod, which was held last month.
