About LBTS
History
Originally named Lynchburg Theological Seminary, Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary was founded in September 1973 in Lynchburg, Virginia, with an enrollment of 41 students.
While Liberty University, Liberty Christian Academy, and the Willmington School of the Bible were founded to help achieve Dr. Jerry Falwell’s vision for Christian education, another need still existed for those desiring graduate theological education in order to serve ministries in churches around the globe. LBTS fills that need, having been founded on the principle that a person’s most effective ministry will be in conjunction with a local church.
In 1975, LBTS was given approval by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia to grant degrees. LBTS is a member of the Evangelical Teacher Training Association and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a graduate school of Liberty University.
LBTS provides quality, well-rounded education; based on academic excellence, emanating from the belief that Christian education should be superior to that provided by other schools.
Academics
LBTS offers many standard seminary degree programs, such as the Ph.D., D. Min., M.Div., and Th.M. In the fall of 2007, the seminary launched eleven new master's programs that target specific areas of ministry, including global apologetics, children's ministry, and Christian leadership. Students have the opportunity to study under some of the world's leading evangelical professors, and resident students experience life at the world's largest evangelical Christian university.
Spiritual & Student Life
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary is committed to students’ spiritual and social lives in addition to academic growth and success. An alternative convocation for students passionate about ministry is held on select Fridays and Campus Church is offered each Wednesday night. LBTS students also have the opportunity to take part in Division 1 NCAA sporting events, festivals, concerts, mission trips and other unique Liberty activities.
