The Lynchburg Area Food Bank distributes food to all 501C3 tax exempt member agencies in an effort to feed the hungry in our area. A total of 221 member agencies belong to the Food Bank and we distribute over one million pounds of food each year to these agencies. Volunteers are needed to stock warehouses and assist in filling agency orders.  Our new location is 501 12th Street Suite B. It is on the corner of 12th & Clay Street in the lower level. There is a post office across one street and a convenient store across the other street.

Supervisor: Nancy Shivers (845-5939 or Email) or Wayne Wade (426-3388 or Email)

The Salvation Army (TSA) offers several volunteer opportunities: the Soup Kitchen, the Family Store, Property Maintenance, Child Care Volunteers, and the Red Kettles. In the Soup Kitchen, TSA serves breakfast and dinner 365 days a year. Volunteers are needed to set up, prepare, serve, clean up and minister to the guests. The Family Store is a resale store that is open Tues-Sat from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help process and sort donations. The Family Store ministers to clients of TSA as well as to the general public. We hold a life skills class for our residents here on Tuesday nights from 6:30-7:30PM, some which have children who need childcare during the class. Red Kettle volunteers are needed to ring the bell at area red kettles between mid November and Christmas Eve. All funds raised from the red kettles go to help families in need in Central Virginia.

The mission of Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit Christian organization, is to eliminate substandard housing in our community. Students can support the ministry of Habitat through volunteering in our office during regular business hours in the following capacities: special projects, publicity, assist with volunteer coordinating, activity planning, answering and making phone calls, data entry, filing, web development, etc. There are opportunities for Christian Service on our construction site Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (during the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.). Students can assist our construction staff with various tasks (e.g., construction tasks, organizing tools, greeting volunteers, cleaning site, etc.).

Assisting the Habitat staff in any of the above capacities is a great opportunity to support the ministry of Habitat for Humanity and have fun!  When volunteering under the CSER program, please identify yourself to our staff so they are aware of the additional administrative requirements of add/drop and evaluation forms.

CSER 566-001: GLEANING FOR THE WORLD
Supervisor:
Danielle Sarchet (434-993-3600 or Email) or Michael Justice (434-993-3600 or Email)
Gleaning For the World (GFTW) is a Christian ministry which began in July 1998 to support and assist the mission organizations around the world. Many of our missionaries cannot afford the medical supplies, medical equipment, food and clothing necessary to influence the people to receive the Christian message. It is our belief that the missionaries deserve the best supplies we have to help them in their ministry.
