Central Virginia Community Services provides the opportunity to gain clinical experience through our internship programs. Internship placements can be found in either Adult & Family Services or Child and Family Services. Some benefits of your internship include direct clinical experience with clients; supervision from experienced and supportive clinicians, training in writing progress notes, treatment plans, and other clinical documentation; and increased knowledge of community resources.  The following departments have need for volunteers: MH/MR Case Management and MH Suports; Parent Center; School Based MH programs - Day Treatment; Outpatient Services - Health & Education; Detoxification Program.  Please note that interns are required to submit an Application for Employment.

CSER 528-001: THE ARC OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA

The Arc of Central Virginia provides services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who reside in the cities of Lynchburg, and Bedford and the counties of Appomattox, Campbell, Amherst and Bedford. The programs are funded by Medicaid, United Way and through a contract with Central Virginia Community Services. Volunteers are needed to work with individuals with disabilities in groups or one-on one in the following programs:

Camp Meadowlark - a four week summer camp for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. Activities include arts and crafts, music, dance, games, swimming and outdoor sports. Camp is operational in the month of July, Monday thru Friday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The Day Support Program - serves adults with intellectual disabilities to increase and maintain skills such as hygiene, self-care, independent living tasks, academics, recreation, socialization and behavioral skills. We also encourage community awareness and participation.

All volunteers must complete an application and agree to reference checks.

CSER 530-001: MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA

The Mental Health Association of Central Virginia (MHACV) is a non-profit, United Way member  agency that has been serving the residents of Central Virginia for over fifty years.  The mission of MHACV is to promote mental health and eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness through advocacy, education, research and service to the residents of Central Virginia .  Volunteers are occasionally needed to help with bulk mailing preparations, literature organization and dissemination and monthly  activities for persons with persistent mental illness.  There is also a limited opportunity for graduate counseling students to co-facilitate groups.

CSER 537-001: SPECIAL OLYMPICS VIRGINIA

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Students who volunteer with Special Olympics Virginia will be given the opportunity to interact with athletes who have intellectual disabilities. The volunteers will help to provide them with opportunities to participate in organized athletic events and practices. Volunteers will also be given the chance to help plan and organize various events throughout the Lynchburg community.
