Volunteers are America’s greatest resource! The Lynchburg Parks & Recreation Department counts on volunteers like you to lend their time and talent to assist with our operations. Opportunities to complete your Christian Service are available in the areas of athletics, youth, senior adults, Nature Zone, Community Market, special events, parks and trails. If you have an idea of how you can help, but don’t see a job listed, please call and talk to us to see how we can help you build your resume and contribute to a healthy, active, and educated community.

Community Centers

Center Assistant - Assists City staff with center programs and activities as follows:


Educational Speaker / Class Instructor – Share your special knowledge, skills, or talent as a speaker or instructor. Possible topics include: health, nutrition, fitness, travel, hobby or interest, musical entertainment, and local opportunities or services of interest to participants.

Event Volunteers – Assist with annual and special events when needed throughout the year. Duties may include set up, clean up, decorating, preparing food, serving food, parking assistance, providing information, and more. Events: Work Projects, Veterans’ Day Luncheon, Festival of Lights at Riverside Park Dec. – Jan., Egg Roll, Guinness Book World Record attempt at the Largest Tree Hug on April 29, 2017, and more.

Sport Activity Assistant – Greets participants, keeps score, and officiates for weekly activities such as Softball, Bowling, Putt-Putt and more.                                                                                                              

Photographer – Takes pictures of classes, activities, and events for future use in brochures and publications.


Athletic Coaches and Assistant Coaches – Coach youth athletic teams teaching sportsmanship, skills, teamwork, and notifying players/parents of practices and games. Sports include: Basketball (December – March) and Girls Softball (spring & fall).

Coaches are also needed for athletic partner organizations providing play in: Football, Cheerleading, Soccer, Baseball, Volleyball, Lacrosse and Tennis. Please check our website ( for contact information for each of these organizations.

Nature Zone

Nature Zone Volunteer – Assist with the operation of the Nature Zone, feeding and handling animals, and cleaning cages. Welcome visitors and provide information about animals and ecosystems at the Nature Zone. Answer phones, providing general information regarding birthday parties and nature programs; set-up and assistance with birthday parties.

Parks and Trail Maintenance

Parks, Trails, and Gardens Assistant – Assist City staff with projects in the parks, trails, and gardens to keep areas mulched, clean, and well maintained for public use.  Monday and Friday afternoons from 12:00 – 4:00 are the primary time frames, other times by arrangement.

Community Market

Bag Check Station Attendant/Courier – Greet patrons, check bags and give a bag check tag in return. Assist patrons by helping carry bags to their vehicle parked in the downtown area. Provide friendly customer service. Saturdays 8:00 am – Noon - Nov. – March.
