CSER 301-001: DEBATE
Supervisor: Michael P. Hall (582-2080 or
Email) and Bessie Grayson (Email)
The Debate Team hosts three debate tournaments. In the fall we host a tournament for college debaters and in the spring we host two tournaments (the Virginia High School League’s State Championship and a tournament for home school debaters). Debaters can expect to do a great deal of work hosting these tournaments, including hospitality (setting up food, beverages and snacks), judging debates (this involves direct interaction with high school debaters), cleaning up and logistical help running the tournament (unlocking doors, helping debaters and coaches find rooms, helping tabulate results, etc). In addition, the debate team does community outreach which usually includes working at the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, visiting a local nursing home during the Christmas season, helping with iKids, and providing coaching help for local high school debate teams that do not have trained debate coaches. Each semester, students who elect to complete this CSER are required to fill their required CSER hours by working at least one tournament and one service project not related to the running of a tournament.
