CSER 509-001: LYNCHBURG JUVENILE DETENTION HOME

A. To provide tutoring services to juveniles to improve reading and writing skills that hopefully will serve to enhance individual self-esteem.

B. Art majors, or those students skilled in crafts, are needed to assist in teaching arts and crafts to juveniles in our custody. Hopefully this interaction would also serve to enhance the self-esteem of the juveniles, and will let them know that someone is interested in them as human beings.

Since our start in 1903, we have helped over 10,000 individuals become healthier, more independent citizens through programs that address emotional, physical and spiritual needs. We provide residential homes, a preschool and an independent living program on our Lynchburg campus for children and teens, and group homes across Virginia for adults with intellectual disabilities. Presbyterian Homes & Family Services accepts clients from all walks of life. Our ministry promotes dignity and develops potential by transforming the lives of individuals, families and communities through nurture, healing and encouragement.

There are many opportunities to volunteer with us at PHFS, including mentoring, tutoring, recreational activities and special events. We invite individuals and groups to share their time with our residents; providing positive and consistent role models who can be active in their lives.

CSER 517-001: GIRL SCOUTS

Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council serves approximately 1000 girls in Lynchburg. Girl Scouting is an informal educational program for girls ages 5-17. Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.  The goals of the Girl Scout Program are stated in four program emphases: Developing Self-potential; Relating to Others; Developing Values; and Contributing to Society. Volunteers are needed to assist with troop meetings on a weekly or every other week basis. Volunteers with special interests and skills may sign up to be on call to help run special events, teach a specific skill, such as crafts, songs, etc. to troops or to do a workshop for leaders. There might also be an opportunity for someone to volunteer to help in the office a couple of times a week with phone calls, filing, etc. To volunteer complete the following Volunteer Information and send us your contact information.

CSER 518-001: PATRICK HENRY BOYS & GIRLS PLANTATION
Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation, Inc. is a private, non-profit children's home designed to provide boys and girls with a residential home based on Christian values. The program focuses on prevention rather than treatment. We have our residential care opportunities as well as outreach opportunities.

RESIDENTIAL SERVICES:

The residential child-care program reaches out a loving hand to children ages 6-17. Volunteers have the opportunity to tutor and to assist with daily activities. Students may volunteer at the Boys Home in Brookneal, The Rustburg Girls Cottage or the Bedford Girls Cottage. Ongoing Needs: African American male and female students to support our African American residents.

Patrick Henry Boy's and Girl's Homes has been fortunate to partner with some of Lynchburg's most popular eateries. When people eat there on specific dates and at certain times, we receive a percentage of those sales! We call it "Eating For A Cause". We have need for people who would be willing to pass out fliers with detailed information about these events to help us promote their existence.  Must be able to walk. Must be able to represent PHBGH in a manner that is friendly. Must not litter our materials for these events and must be able to meet contact person at agreed location to obtain fliers.

CSER 519-001: MILLER HOME FOR GIRLS

Miller Home of Lynchburg is a residential group home for non-delinquent girls ages 5 to 18 who are unable to live with their parent/guardian. Students may volunteer Monday through Thursday in the evening and spend time tutoring, working with games and crafts, and playing outside with the residents. Other volunteer experiences will be considered on a case by case basis.

Job Corps' mission is to attract eligible young adults, teach them the skills they need to become employable and independent, and place them in meaningful jobs or further education. The STARS initiative is a mentoring and tutoring program that uses volunteers to help this young men and women achieve these goals.

CSER 536-001: YMCA LIVE Y-ERS

The YMCA child care program provides care for children six weeks through 12 years of ages (21 for children with Special Needs). Volunteers at the Preschool may help with story time, nap time, inside & outside activities, large and small motor skill development, swim time and arts and crafts. Hours to volunteer would be between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. for the Preschool. The Before & After School Programs are housed in eight Lynchburg Elementary School locations; Bass, Bedford Hills, Dearington, Heritage, Linkhorne, Perrymont, Sandusky and Sheffield Elementary Schools. Volunteers would be useful in the area of inside & outside activities, homework tutoring, character development, and arts & crafts. Volunteers are also needed in the area of homework tutoring in specific subject areas. The hours are 3 p.m. to 6 pm from Monday through Friday, during the school year. The YMCA Special Buddies program is a program designed for children with special needs. Children from all over Lynchburg participate in activities with our Special needs coordinator. Volunteers working with the Special buddies will help with self help skills such as money, writing names, and letters and other essential activities designed for the individual child.

CSER 543-001: SALVATION ARMY - INNER CITY

The Salvation Army (TSA) offers several volunteer opportunities: the Soup Kitchen, Noah’s Ark Day Care, the Youth Program, the Family Store, Learning Room, Property Maintenance, and the Red Kettles. In the Soup Kitchen, TSA serves breakfast and dinner 365 days a year. Volunteers are needed to set up, prepare, serve, clean up and minister to the guests. Noah’s Ark Day Care provides low cost daycare to low income families. Volunteers are needed to assist in the classrooms, interact with the children and help with after-school activities. The Youth Program is open everyday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. The Youth Program provides a meal, help with homework and a safe place for inner city youth to come after school. Volunteers are needed to help with homework, play games and interact with the youth. The Family Store is a resale store that is open M-F from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help process, sort and price donations. The Family Store ministers to clients of TSA as well as to the general public. The Learning Room is in need of Tudors for young children. Contact Kirby Crews at (email) if interested in this opportunity.  Red Kettle volunteers are needed to ring the bell at area red kettles between mid-November and Christmas Eve. All funds raised from the red kettles go to help families in need in Central Virginia.

CSER 545-001: LYNCHBURG PARKS AND RECREATION

Center Assistant – Act as receptionist to greet participants and answer phone, taking messages; assist with luncheon preparation and clean up; set-up and monitoring of scheduled Center activities; and monitor computer lab.

Educational Speaker / Class Instructor – Presents educational or life enhancing topic in accordance with hobbies, knowledge, education, and skills. Topic could be related to: health/fitness, trade or profession, hobby and/or local opportunities or services of interest to senior population.

Event Volunteers – Assists with annual events when needed throughout the year decorating, preparing food, serving, and cleaning-up. Events: Spring Banquet, Veterans’ Day Luncheon, Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving Luncheon.

Dance Volunteers – Assists with making decorations, decorating, preparing refreshments, and cleaning-up. Themed dances are held two to three times a year.

Newsletter Assistant – Assists with production, writing and editing of Fifty Plus, a newsletter for the seniors.

Sport Activity Assistant – Greets participants, keeps score, and officiates for weekly activities such as Horseshoes, Volleyball, Softball, Bowling, Putt- Putt and more.

Photographer – Takes pictures of classes, activities, and events for future use in brochures and publications.

CSER 546-001: TEAM GENESIS

Team Genesis is a Christian non-profit organization headquartered in Lynchburg.  Our focus is “Excellence in education, athletics and character”. We are dedicated to identifying, developing and implementing elite sports and education related programs and projects designed to help youth meet their athletic aspirations, maximize their full personal and academic potential and function successfully in their homes, schools, colleges, community, churches and sports programs. With this mission comes a variety of volunteer opportunities to serve local youth ages 5-18.

Education, tutoring and mentoring:

Books and Ball Program Tutors and Mentors-With a history of assisting over 100 high school student athletes in obtaining college scholarship through our Houston, Texas, site, we offer this exciting opportunity to carry on this proud legacy in Lynchburg by volunteering for our Books and Ball Program. Books and Ball is open to all area high school athletes and provides student athletes with tutoring and assistance with the college recruiting process. We need your help to ensure that any high school athlete who is offered an athletic scholarship to attend college also has the resources needed to remain academically eligible. Volunteers will assist with tutoring, mentoring and teaching organization and study skills to students in a Christian environment. Education majors are encouraged to participate to gain experience, and recommendation letters will be written on behalf of volunteers if requested.

Genesis Academy Teaching Assistant-Genesis Academy is an all-boys private boarding school located in Lynchburg. Teacher assistants will provide support in our Learning Center by helping students with class work, preparing bulletin boards, supervising lunch, preparing correspondence and other tasks in collaboration with the lead teacher. Special assistance is needed with our ReadMaster Program, which is a computerized reading and comprehension program. Qualified assistants may also provide specialized assistance in math, or assist with science labs. Normal school hours are M-F, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m., and flexible schedules can be arranged.

Athletics:

Genesis Academy Basketball-Genesis Academy hosts an elite line up, with students from all over the US enrolled in our Gifted Athletes Program. There is a great need for volunteers for all areas within our athletics program including assistant coaches, score keepers, stat keepers, game day operations, game film, clock keepers, practice and training assistants, nutritionists and ticket takers.

Students who volunteer with Genesis will be given the opportunity to mentor participants in athletics and life! Volunteers may also be given the chance to help plan and organize various athletic events throughout the area.

CSER 548-001: NEW COVENANT SCHOOLS

Teacher Assistants: At New Covenant Schools, a Christ-centered and classical school for K-12, the teacher assistants will provide support to the individual classroom teachers by grading assignments, helping students with class work, conducting reading groups, preparing bulletin boards, assisting students with art projects, and supervising the recess breaks on the playground. Qualified assistants may also provide extra one-on-one tutoring for students with special needs in math or reading. Teacher assistants to the Physical Education teacher are also needed to help supervise athletic activities and P.E. classes. Assistant coaching possibilities exist for helping with teams (intramural, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse) practices and games. The teacher assistants will work out their schedules with the supervising teachers based on the needs of the teacher and availability of the student workers. Except for assistant teaching coaches, assistants are needed primarily on weekdays during school hours (8:00 am - 3:00 pm).  Please feel free to contact Beth Jackson for details of the specific volunteer needs, more information, or to volunteer.

CSER 550-001: LYNCHBURG PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Lynchburg Public Library recruits volunteers to work in Circulation, Youth Services, and Outreach departments. In Circulation volunteers may assist at the front desk receiving, and sorting materials as they are returned, pulling DVDs, and reserved books. In Youth Services volunteers may help with preparing craft materials, cleaning books, and assisting staff during programs. In Outreach volunteers may help shelve books, and DVDs.

Volunteers can complete an on line application through the Lynchburg City website,
(under department select Library), or pick up an application at the front desk, and turn in to the front desk at 2315 Memorial Ave. An interview will be set, then placement is made for an agreeable time, and job assignment. Volunteers are expected to work at least two hours a week to complete their 20 hours.

CSER 560-001: JUBILEE FAMILY DEVELOPMENT CENTER

Jubilee is a Christian educational and recreational center providing various services to the community consisting of a free health screening clinic and a computer lab. We also provide tutoring, mentoring and other educational and health awareness programs for youth and adults. We operate weekly; Mon-Fri 3-7pm. We are strategically located so as to minister especially to inner-city and single family homes in Lynchburg. If you have a strong desire to make an impact in the inner city and with youth in a Christian environment then Jubilee is for you!

Special needs for volunteers include:

• Nursing students needed to work in Centra Health Screening Clinic Mon-Fri 3-5 pm and also to assist in planning health education seminars for the community.
• Education majors and other students are needed to work with the after school tutoring program and recreational program (excellent for Health and Fitness Majors, too)
• Youth ministry majors are need to organize youth crusades, youth Bible study, youth concerts and more.
• Computer majors are needed to help students in the Computer Lab from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Mon-Fri.
• Mentors are always needed to be matched with inner city boys and girls ages six to 16.

Other ministry opportunities are available on Saturdays. Liberty students will be given the opportunity and the freedom to plan and sponsor their own events. We have the facility and we will match it with your idea! The greatest impact that we can make, of course, is by presenting JESUS and you will be free to do this where the need is tremendous.
