Biography

Prior to joining Liberty’s chemistry faculty in 2017, Dr. Bender worked in corporate research for Rohm and Haas and Dow Chemical.

Dr. Bender’s industrial experience involved the use of analytical chemistry to help confirm, or refute, hypotheses that research teams were proposing with the overall goal of widening the intellectual property scope of potential commercial inventions.

Research Interests

Dr. Bender’s research interests at Liberty have included:
• Finding and identifying microplastic particles in freshwater crayfish
• Analyses of water from older hand-dug, stone-lined wells near the mineral springs at New
London, Virginia
• Chemical mapping (via orthophosphates) the possible human usage patterns in an excavated
basement in the mid 1750’s “Mead’s Tavern” in New London, Virginia.

Dr. Bender’s research objectives at Liberty are all targeted at providing lab opportunities for first year undergraduate students who are chemistry or forensics majors.
