Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)

In July of 2012, Liberty University purchased a subscription to the University of Miami’s Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) to provide research ethics education for individuals involved in social and behavioral and biomedical research.

Liberty’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) has been in the process of implementing a requirement that all researchers take CITI modules prior to having their research approved. To that end, CITI courses have been created for LU departments and disciplines that include modules specific to the type of research typically conducted by their researchers.

Courses contain a set of core modules along with a set of electives. Modules consist of written material followed by a short quiz. CITI courses are free to LU-affiliated individuals, but there are fees for participants wishing to obtain continuing education credits.

CITI is located at https://www.citiprogram.org/. To begin taking CITI courses, researchers will first need to create a login. The IRB has prepared login instructions to assist researchers in getting started.

As of April 15, 2013, all School of Education (SOE) dissertation students submitting research applications to the IRB must complete the SOE’s CITI course. To assist students in meeting this requirement, CITI information is provided in two of the SOE’s EdD classes. Similar department-specific requirements will be implemented in the coming months.
