In La Paz, Bolivia, the shoe shiners cover their faces when they work because of the social stigma and low status assigned to them. They are described in the tourist books under the heading “Dangers and Annoyances.” But we know that they are no more dangerous or annoying than any other person—they simply need new life! We believe that shoe shiners can find acceptance and hope and will one day become a genuine asset for this city. We’d like to see the guidebooks say something like, “If you ever are in need of something while in La Paz, find a smiling shoe shiner to help you.” Come join us at our first-ever sports camp for shoe shiners and present the only source of hope and life. We are certain that Bolivians and Americans alike will be changed!
