Dean Patton was born in Missouri, but considers Virginia home as his family is all from Danville, Virginia. After moving all over the country he settled in Lynchburg in 2001.
"Lynchburg is a great place to live and work. We are in the shadow of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains; we sit on the banks of the James River, and are not too far from the beach! What’s not to love?"
He has been with Liberty University since 2002 and has served in various roles with the online division. He has served as the Associate Dean for the College of General Studies Online since January of 2011 and is passionate about the department’s mission to set students up for academic success. He enjoys collaborating with other departments and helping those ideas come to life.
"It is a very exciting position that finds me able to serve both students and faculty members. When I came to Liberty we had about 5000 online students. Going into the 2013-2014 academic year we have well over 90000. Very exciting! We have a great team in CGS and have a good time doing what we do! I am blessed to be here."
His wife Amy works as a nurse educator at Lynchburg General Hospital and also serves as an adjunct faculty member with the School of Nursing at Liberty. They have been happily for 23 years and have a 14 year old daughter, Madeleine. They attend Brentwood Church in Lynchburg, where they have served in various capacities.

"Living three miles from the James River makes this pretty easy! Some friends and I have kayaked from the headwaters of the James 300 miles all the way to Jamestown."
In recent years he has visited the biblical and historical sites of western Turkey (2010). In March of 2013 he was able to visit Rome and Athens with a group of LUO students for a Humanities course.
