MATH 100: Fundamentals of Mathematics
A review of basic arithmetic and elementary algebra. Open to all students but required of students with low scores on Liberty University placement tests and inadequate preparation in mathematics. A grade of C or better is required in order to go on to a higher-numbered mathematics course. This course may not be used in meeting General Education requirements in mathematics.
MATH 105: Algebra for Non-STEM Majors
Prerequisite: PLMA 60-74. A review of algebra for students pursuing non-STEM majors to provide the skills needed for a higher level mathematics course. Students who pass the course will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: equations and inequalities, exponents, polynomials, factoring, graphing linear equations, radicals, and problem solving. A grade of A, B, or C is required to enroll in the next higher level math course. This course may not be used to meet the General Education requirement.
MATH 105 is designed for students whose Degree Completion Plan includes MATH 114, 115, 117, or 201 and no non-math courses with math prerequisites.
MATH 106: Algebra for STEM Majors
Prerequisite: PLMA 65-74. A review of algebra for students pursuing STEM majors to provide the skills needed for higher level mathematics or science courses. Students who pass the course will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: exponents, polynomials, factoring, number systems, graphing, rational expressions, radicals, equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations, and problem solving. A grade of A, B, or C is required to enroll in the next higher level math course. This course may not be used to meet the General Education requirement.
MATH 106 is designed for students who need MATH 121, 125 or a science course with a prerequisite of the current MATH 110.
MATH 110: Intermediate Algebra
Review of exponents, polynomials, factoring, roots and radicals, graphing, rational expressions, equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations and problem solving. This course may not be used to meet the General Education requirement.
MATH 114: Quantitative Reasoning
Prerequisite: MATH 100 with C or better. Applying mathematical tools and analysis to practical context, particularly focusing on using proportions and ratios. Basic statistical tools are developed and employed, including graphs, descriptive statistics, the normal curve, the basics of inferential reasoning and investigating correlation. Financial applications are particularly emphasized, as is the use of spreadsheets.
MATH 115: Mathematics for Liberal Arts
Prerequisite: MATH 110, minimum grade of “C”. A survey course for liberal arts majors including a review of algebra and an introduction to logic, probability and statistics, mathematical structure, problem solving, number theory, geometry and consumer applications.
MATH 121: College Algebra
Prerequisite: MATH 110, minimum grade of “C”. Fundamental concepts of college algebra including sets, equations and inequalities, functions and graphs, polynomials, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear inequalities, and linear programming.
MATH 201 and BUSI 230: Introduction to Probability and Statistics
Prerequisite: MATH 110, minimum grade of “C”. Introduction to descriptive statistics and probability, probability distributions, estimation, tests of hypotheses, chi-square tests, regression analysis, and correlation with applications in business and science.
The Distance Learning mathematics courses all use the MyMathLab computer learning system. All work (homework, quizzes, and tests) are done in the MyMathLab system. The textbook and the MyMathLab tutorials and other resources are available to help the students to learn the material and each class is proctored by a mathematics teacher who can give assistance as needed. Only students in residential MATH 100, 105, 106, 110, 114, 115, 121, 201 and BUSI 230 courses may use the Math Emporium.
MATH 100, 105, 106, 110, 114, 115, 121, 201 and BUSI 230 are currently offered through Liberty University Online. Residential students may not take MATH 100 or MATH 110 online.
