Field Experiences: Requesting Procedures

What is a field experience?

Early and ongoing field experiences are crucial for initial and advanced licensure preparation. The continuum of field experiences required in Liberty's program includes course-embedded practicums in preK-12 settings and culminates in either student teaching or internship during the final semester. Field experiences are course-embedded requirements for designated courses in each program. Field experiences must include a variety of settings appropriate to the endorsement: multiple grade levels and interaction with diverse students (e.g., minority, at-risk and exceptional students). Documentation of field experiences for each candidate is maintained by the candidate and a cumulative field log is submitted to the Liberty University's School of Education upon completion of the licensure program.

A Few Helpful Items:

  • Deadline for Requesting Placement:

    • Unless otherwise noted by the Local or External Field Offices, the deadline for ALL placement requests is WEDNESDAY of WEEK ONE.

  • Background and Fingerprint Check (ADB):

    • This is a requirement for ALL students, whether or not you are a current school employee.  Please see this link for additional information regarding this requirement:  ADB Background and Fingerprint Check

  • School Administration Candidates ONLY:

    • If you are already employed as a teacher, discuss with your building administrator and/or district office about the need for you to complete field experiences.  Many districts will permit teachers under their employment to serve on leadership teams, to volunteer for school improvement projects, etc., without requiring a placement request through the university.  If this is so, you may forgo the placement request process for course-embedded practicums.  Please note that some school systems may still require you to submit a formal request through the university.  If this is the case, you will need to follow the appropriate procedures as stated above.
  • Non-licensure Candidates:

    • Please understand that in some cases, the field offices are limited to the number of placements that are available for non-licensure candidates. In one of these instances, you will be encouraged to pursue placement through a different school system or through a community setting.
