Dr. Joseph Spears has a terminal doctoral degree in sports management with an emphasis in sports marketing, and his coursework has covered a wide range of topics in the various marketing, sport management, leadership, sport law and other social issues in sports marketing and public relations. Spears’ research has provided him the opportunity to draw connections between different areas and communicate difficult concepts clearly to students of all levels. Spears is committed to an interdisciplinary approach to scholarship and teaching and strives to cultivate an interactive environment in which students can express themselves freely while learning to engage with the past in meaningful ways. Spears emphasizes critical thinking and the need to consider sports within its larger social, historical and intellectual contexts.
Spears completed a master’s degree and an undergraduate degree in the interdisciplinary studies of Christian education. Having held positions as a pastor, sport chaplain, Adjunct Professor of sport and religion and teaching assistant, he has gained valuable experience leading and working with university faculty, staff, parents, undergraduate and graduate students in facilitating programs. In addition to classroom instruction, Spears has advised and counseled students on appropriate research topics.
Like other practitioners in his field, Spears' philosophy for learning evolves‚ and will continue to do so over the years. The guiding principle in Spears' commitment now encompasses the idea that he should constantly seek out ways to be empowered and sharpen every necessary skill to take control of his own learning and, at the same time, emulate the behaviors that he expects his students to acquire. As a teacher, Spears continues to take charge of his own individual development as a writer, researcher and administrator. The activities that Spears is engaged in (e.g., learning a second/third language, presenting new ideas at professional conferences, publishing research, participating in professional organizations, etc.) have a significant impact on his work. Rather than view the development of teaching as the mastery of prevailing principals and theories that have been laid down by others, Spears prefers to devise his own workable teaching models based on experience as both a teacher and learner. Rather than just keep abreast of changes, Spears leads them and finds his own niche in sport management.
Research areas of interest: Sports, race, church, religion and collegiate chaplaincy.
With direct sports experience in corporate sponsorship, sales, development, management and marketing, Spears drove new sponsorship revenue along with opportunities to manage other sponsorship sales and marketing executives. Spears generated appointments with A-C Level prospects through networking, prospecting, business clubs and social events. Spears presented custom sponsorship packages including signage, sport promotions, internet advertising, hospitality, tickets and all other sport marketing resources. Spears entertained and nurtured relationships with clients and prospects through creative means including networking events, speaking engagements, one-on-one meetings, visits at marketing and sales events, open houses, exclusive partner events and outside meetings. Spears has had responsibility for coordinating direct mail processes with agencies and vendors. Other sport marketing efforts in which Spears has experience includes preparing analysis of market trends, campaign performance and fundraising.
Spears, along with his wife Shelia, have both been called to ministry where they believe that “spiritual fitness is the solution.” It is their goal to see diverse individuals coming together from all walks of life, regardless of race, denomination or economic status. With a daughter, Jaaziah, and a son, Jonathan, Spears and his wife understand the need and importance of spiritually, socially and economically developing families and communities within the body of Christ. It is their deepest desire to do the will of God and see the kingdom of God manifested here on earth.
Armed with a vision from God and a mission to “Change Lives, One Life at a Time,” Spears and his wife utilize sports along with the “Girls Rock” ministry to partner with other community organizations and leaders to provide educational and informational programs that promote the well being of the entire community.
Spears enjoys spending time with his wife and children. His sport background is long-distance road and trail running, biking, boxing and football. He is actively involved in community and urban relations.
