Vicky Martin, D.S.M.

Full Professor, Chair

Dr. Vicky Martin has been a member of the Department of Sport Management faculty since 2005, and has been the chair of the department since 2006. Being both an athlete and a coach for many years, Martin offers her students a unique perspective into the realm of sport management. Martin serves as the supervisor for the sport management practicum and internship students, and is passionate about helping students discover which direction God is calling them to work toward.

Mr. Christopher Amos

Assistant Professor

Mr. Christopher Amos joined the Department of Sport Management staff in Fall, 2012. Mr. Amos is a graduate of Liberty University where he received his Bachelor's degree in Sport Management and his Master's Degree in Sport Management.

Phillip E. Blosser, Ph.D.

Associate Professor

Dr. Phillip Blosser’s areas of specialty within the Sport Management Department are sport tourism and mega-event tourism. He offers students a unique perspective into the “behind-the-scenes” area of sport and event organization and management. Blosser was one of the first four students to graduate out of the Department of Sport Management at Liberty, and was also the first to teach a graduate class within the department.

T. Andrew Coleman, M.Ed.

Assistant Professor

Andrew Coleman joined the Sport Management faculty at Liberty in 2010. Coleman is a seasoned coach and is passionate about training godly, equipped coaches and professionals. He teaches all of the department coaching and officiating classes and offers the students a unique perspective into the realm of coaching while also developing godly leaders with a desire to be a positive influence of those they coach.

Jordan B. Davies, J.D.

Adjunct Professor

Jordan Davies is a trial attorney practicing with the law firm of Harris & Allen, P.C., located in downtown Lynchburg. His practice focuses on the areas of criminal defense, family law, civil litigation and creditors’ rights. He is licensed to practice in Virginia and is admitted to the U.S. District Court for both the Western and Eastern Districts of Virginia. Davies is a member of the American Bar Association and Lynchburg Bar Association.

Kevin C. Heisey, Ph.D.

Associate Professor

Dr. Kevin Heisey comes to Liberty University after serving as the Graduate Coordinator at the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Cortland, where he was a faculty member from 2002 until his arrival over the summer of 2011.

Heisey competed in wrestling at the NCAA level and as a member of the United States Air Force wrestling team.  He was an assistant coach at the college level and worked as an administrator and clinician for high school and youth clubs and clinics.

Clark T. W. Zealand, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Graduate Director

Dr. Clark Zealand joined the Sport Management faculty in 2008 as the first Sport Management faculty member at Liberty to specialize in Adventure Sport and Outdoor Recreation Management. As an e-commerce owner, event management organization owner, race director, elite athlete and former NCAA Division I coach, Zealand offers students a unique perspective into the realm of outdoor recreation and sport management. He is passionate about offering students opportunities to gain hands-on experience to complement what they are learning in the classroom.

Melanie Cox

Department Secretary

When visiting the Sport Management Department, Melanie Cox is most likely the first person you will see. Cox joined the Sport Management staff in 2008 as the department secretary. She is committed to providing a friendly and helpful environment for all who enter the Sport Management office.

Graduate Secretary

Alene Stallman is originally from Vinton, Va. She has worked the majority of her professional career in Information Systems Administration and as a Legal Assistant/Secretary.

Ashley Teer

Coordinator of Internships and Special Topics

Originally from British Columbia Canada, Ashley Teer joins the Department of Sport Management as the new Coordinator of Internships and Special Topics. Ashley is a 2009 graduate of Liberty University with a Bachelor's of Science in Communication Studies.

Julia Anderson

Graduate Student Assistant

Julia Anderson is a 2001 graduate of Liberty University with a degree in Kinesiology: Fitness Specialist. She joined the Department of Sport Management as a Graduate Student Assistant in the Fall of 2013 seeking her masters degree in Outdoor Adventure Sport.

 


Mark Romig

Graduate Student Assistant

Mark Romig is a 2013 graduate of Northland International University with a major in Sport Ministry and a minor in Spanish. Mark joined the Department of Sport Management in the Fall of 2013 as a Graduate Student Assistant seeking his masters in Sport Administration.

Dr. Marsha Coker

Adjunct Professor

Joining the Department of Sport Management in 2012, Dr. Coker has spent many of her 15 years of teaching educating students in nutrition in middle school as a volunteer basketball, volleyball, and soccer sponsor. It is her desire to model community and school involvement while emphasizing, not only physical health, but spiritual and mental health, as well.

Eric Cohu, Ed.D.

Adjunct Professor

Dr. Eric Cohu served as a full-time Assistant Professor in the Department of Sport Management at Liberty University from the fall of 2006 until the spring of 2009. He then left Liberty to pursue his passion of coaching high school football by accepting the head football coach position at Madison Academy in Huntsville, Ala.

Cohu worked in the financial industry prior to entering higher education. Some of his clients included the Tennessee Titans, the Nashville Predators as well as many executives in the music and healthcare industries.

Thomas M. Mingus, Ph.D.

Adjunct Professor

Dr. Thomas Mingus serves Liberty University and the Department of Sport Management as one of our crucial distance learning faculty. Mingus is a former two-sport athlete with a passion for sports and U.S. history.

Born in Painesville, Ohio, he is a current resident of York, Pa. Mingus co-wrote a Civil War book with his brother entitled "Human Interest Stories of the Civil War." In addition to being a published author, he had photographs published in the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star and in his father’s book, "Flames Beyond Gettysburg: The Gordon Expedition, June 1863."

Chrystal Denmark Porter, Ph.D., Ed.S.

Adjunct Professor

Since 2008, Dr. Chrystal Porter has served as the Assistant Dean of Sport Science and Fitness Studies and Assistant Professor/Chair of Sport Management at Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. Dr. Porter has provided leadership and vision for the Sport Management, Athletic Training and Physical Education academic majors, the Exercise Science minor and the coaching certification.

In 2012, Dr. Porter was appointed as the Dean of the Graduate School at Endicott College.

Prior to entering higher education, Porter served as a sales associate for the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche in Denver, Colo. She also completed a variety of quality internships at prominent sports organizations such as the Bonham Group, The Women's Sports Foundation, Denver Nuggets and Ohio University Athletics.

Dr. Julie Powell

Adjunct Professor

Since 1995 Dr. Julie Powell has served full-time at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, and joined the Liberty faculty in June of 2012. Powell has served in several roles within the university such as sports information director and intramural director before moving into teaching full time in 2000. When Union developed the undergraduate sport management program, she was offered the opportunity to teach and could not resist the opportunity to blend a passion for sports with a love of teaching. Currently in her 18th year at Union, Powell has been blessed to see the program grow and watch students serve the Lord through sports in various ways. After completing a Doctorate in Sport Management and Leadership in 2009, she has enjoyed teaching graduate students who come from a variety of backgrounds such as teaching, coaching, and sport management.

Dr. Jennifer Ruddell

Dr. Jennifer Ruddell joined the Sport Management Department in 2012 as an Online Instructor with an emphasis in Disability Sport.

Joseph C. Spears Jr., Ed.D.

Adjunct Professor

Dr. Joseph Spears served as a sport management faculty member at Howard University in Washington, District of Columbia, and Wallace Community College in Dothan, Ala.

Before beginning a career in higher education, Spears held management-level positions in sport event management, sport promotions and sport sponsorship. There he generated appointments with A-C Level prospects through networking, prospecting, business clubs and social events. Other experience includes preparing analysis of market trends and fundraising. 

Spears is committed to an interdisciplinary approach to scholarship and teaching, and strives to cultivate an interactive environment in which students can express themselves freely while learning to engage with the past in meaningful ways.  He emphasizes critical thinking and the need to consider sports within its larger social, historical and intellectual contexts.

Spears background in sport includes long distance road and trail running, biking, boxing and football.  He is actively involved in community and urban relations.
