Early Childhood Add-On Licensure

An initial elementary teaching license is required for candidates seeking the early childhood add-on license. The supervised practicum (EDUC 698) required for this program must be completed in a preschool setting (with three- and four-year olds) in a public school or an accredited nonpublic school. The candidate must have at least 45 instructional hours in these areas.

Gifted Add-On Licensure

An initial elementary, special education, middle school, or secondary teaching license is required for candidates seeking the gifted add-on license. The supervised practicum (EDUC 698) must include teaching experiences with gifted students in a heterogeneously grouped (mixed ability) classroom or a homogeneously grouped (single ability) classroom. The candidate must have at least 45 instructional hours in these areas.

Middle School Add-On Licensure

An initial elementary teaching license is required for candidates seeking the middle school add-on license. The supervised practicum (EDUC 698) must include teaching experiences in a middle school 6-8 grade classroom. Must meet content competencies and pass Praxis II Middle School test for one of the following: math, English, social studies, or science. In Virginia, students who hold an initial teaching license may add a middle school endorsement for math, English, science and/or social studies by passing the middle school Praxis II exam for the content area in which they desire a license.
