The Virginia Department of Education may issue updated Licensure Regulations for School Personnel that result in program changes. Please contact the Liberty University Teacher Licensure Office for updates on program requirements. (434) 582-2632

Courses completed in the distance delivery format were approved for Virginia licensure. Master's candidates who wish to apply for Virginia Licensure must meet the following endorsement requirements.

Elementary, Secondary and Special Education:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in a liberal arts major or equivalent. (Secondary licensure requires a major in the teaching endorsement area or significant content area coursework and a passing score on the corresponding Praxis II content area test.)
  • Complete a student teaching experience in the endorsement area or submit documentation of one year of successful full-time teaching experience in the endorsement area in an accredited public or non-public school.
  • Successfully complete Liberty University's approved master's program in the corresponding area.
  • Obtain passing scores on the tests required for Virginia licensure.

Program Specialist:

  • Complete the required classroom teaching experience. (Work experience form required.)
  • Hold or be eligible for teacher licensure in the state of Virginia.
  • Successfully complete Liberty University's approved master's program for Program Specialists which includes a school-based internship.

Administration/Supervision:

  • Complete three years of successful, full-time teaching experience in an accredited non-public or public school. (Letters of verification required.)
  • Successfully complete Liberty University's master's program in Administration/Supervision.
  • Complete a full-time, 90 day internship in an accredited public or non-public school setting or complete an appropriate practicum and the School Leaders Licensure Examination.

School Counseling:

  • Complete two years of successful full-time teaching or two years of successful experience in guidance and counseling. (Letters of verification required.)
  • Successfully complete Liberty's M.Ed. in School Counseling which includes an internship of at least 200 clock hours of clinical experiences (100 clock hours in each setting: pre K-6 and grades 7-12).

Students must complete a minimum of nine semester hours in on-campus residency to complete any graduate level licensure program.
