GATE 3: Admission to Student Teaching

When must I apply to student teach?

You should apply at the beginning of the term before the semester that you plan to student teach. Deadlines* are as follows:

Sept. 1 for student teaching in the following spring semester
Feb. 1 for student teaching in the following fall semester

*Deadlines effective as of Fall 2013

How do I apply?

Your Gate 3 application must be completed using your LiveText account.

What are the admission requirements?

Degree Completion Plan Audit - evidence of 2.5 minimum GPA (cumulative)
Graduation Checklist - evidence that all coursework will be completed prior to student teaching (If CLEP tests are used to satisfy a course requirement, passing CLEP scores are due before the Gate 3 application deadline.)
Passing score reports for 1.) Praxis II, 2.) VCLA, and 3.) RVE for Elementary and Special Education Majors

If I want to teach in an external placement in the U.S. or overseas, do I have different requirements?

Yes, you have different requirements (eg. higher GPA requirement, recommendation forms, etc.). Please see the Information for External Student Teaching Placements.

What are the traditional breakdowns of student teaching in our initial licensure areas?

Elementary:
- Elementary only (PreK-6)
- Elementary with middle (PreK-8)
Special Ed:
- General Curriculum (K-12)
- Dual Licensure (PreK-6 Elementary & K-12 Special Education)
Secondary:
- Endorsement Area (6-12)

Comprehensive PreK-12:
- Endorsement Area (PreK-6 & 6-12)

Minimum: 300 cumulative hours, including 150 directed student teaching

Accepting Initial Applications during this timeframe

Sept. 1

No initial applications accepted after Sept. 1st.

Feb. 1

Initial Status Responses: Candidates are informed of their status during this timeframe.

Status may be: Approved, Probation or Denied

Sept. 1-Sept. 15

Candidates must have an answer by Sept. 15 through email and by LiveText rubric that states their status.

Feb. 1 - Feb. 15

Candidates must have an answer by Feb. 15 through email and by LiveText rubric that states their status.

Revision Window Candidates use these two weeks to fix any problems associated with the initial application. They will resubmit the revised application during this window.

Sept. 15 - Oct. 1

No resubmissions will be accepted after Oct. 1.

Feb. 15 - March 1

No resubmissions will be accepted after March 1.

Revised Application Resubmission - FINAL DEADLINE!!!

Candidates must resubmit the revised application by this final date.

Oct. 1
