The Center for Teaching Excellence

About Us

CTE provides faculty with the resources, skills, training, and information to empower them to become more effective educators. The Center seeks to increase the understanding of the teaching-learning process, promote teaching as scholarly activity and encourage interdisciplinary conversations about teaching and learning among members of the University community.

CTE promotes academic excellence by impacting student learning outcomes through continuous and intentional professional development of online and residential faculty. Working with partners from across the University, we support the Provost’s academic initiatives of promoting teaching innovation and the integration of academic technologies into instruction.

In August 2011, a dedicated staff and facility were charged to provide a variety of professional development programming for faculty under the leadership of the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Provost and in response to a recommendation of the Liberty University Strategic Plan for 2011-2014.

With faculty input from a representative Advisory Board, the CTE staff of professionals includes the Director, a Teaching Advisor, two Educational Technologists, an Administrative Assistant, and a Receptionist. Offerings include confidential consultations in teaching, including classroom observations with pre and post-conferences, goal setting, assistance with Blackboard and other instructional technologies, workshops in a variety of teaching and learning topics, intensive “boot camp” style training,  round-table discussions, communities of practice, a web site and Faculty Communication Center.

Located in 3031-32 DeMoss Hall, the CTE houses private consultation offices, a faculty training classroom with flexible furniture and The Forum, an area for small group discussions.


Confidentiality Statement

The Center for Teaching Excellence promotes teacher reflection, interdisciplinary conversations, the integration of technology and innovative pedagogies, and the advancement of excellence in classroom instruction.  The center's purpose is to assist, rather than to assess, in the continued pursuit of perfecting the craft of teaching with the goal of improved student learning. All practices follow the ethical guidelines established by the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education. The center is a confidential resource for the faculty.  To this goal:

  • The CTE does not participate in required institutional evaluations in the role of a summative evaluator, nor does it share information about faculty to anyone who evaluates them.
  • The CTE does not share the names or other information about who it observes or consults.
  • The CTE does not share the results of its observations, consultations, findings, or suggestions.
  • The CTE protects the confidentiality of conversations that occur with faculty and staff.
