CLEP - College Level Exam Program

What is CLEP?

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) offers a unique opportunity to gain college credit for the knowledge you have acquired. The program includes 34 tests covering a variety of subjects. Formal study, private reading, on-the-job experience, non-credit courses, business training, television/radio courses, travel, and superior high school courses are just a few ways knowledge is acquired.

Eligibility for CLEP

Any student (resident, Liberty University Online, high school, home school, and students from another institution) is eligible to take a CLEP test.

Candidates who score at the 75th percentile or above on either the SAT or the ACT are likely to meet the minimum scores as established by Liberty University. Other candidates who have done extensive reading or who have relative life experience may also profit from the CLEP.

Testing at another location

It is permissible to take a CLEP test at another location other than Liberty University.  Click on this link for locations in your area:

http://apps.collegeboard.com/cbsearch_clep/searchCLEPTestCenter.jsp

Please be sure to select Liberty University as your score recipient.  After you have completed the test, remember to obtain a printed score report, with the exception of the College Composition exams.

Costs

  1. NON-REFUNDABLE $50 Registration/Proctoring Fee, payable to Liberty University (cash, check, or credit card), due when your form is turned in to reserve a computer.
  2. A fee of $80 is charged for each examination, payable to CLEP by credit card (VISA, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express) when you take the test.

Changes or cancelations

You may change the test you take, as long as it is at your appointed time. If you cannot keep your appointment, you must cancel and re-register, which includes paying an additional registration/proctoring fee.

Registration procedures - Click below for registration form.

Make sure you have read all the CLEP information on this site first. To register, you must:

  • Complete the Registration Form (see link below)
  • THE REGISTRATION FORM DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY REGISTER YOU FOR YOUR SELECTED DATE AND TIME. YOU MUST BRING THIS FORM TO THE BRUCKNER LEARNING CENTER IN DEMOSS HALL 3000 TO COMPLETE REGISTRATION.

* IF YOU DO NOT LIVE LOCALLY, PLEASE CALL 434-582-2408 TO CONFIRM YOUR TIME.

REGISTRATION FORM

  • Bring the Registration Form with your $50 (cash, check payable to LU, or credit card) to the Bruckner Learning Center (DeMoss Hall 3000). Appointments are made on a first come first served basis. (See link below for office hours.)
  • Complete the CLEP tutorial program, which explains the testing process (See NOTE below for ways to do this). It will allow you to practice the computer-based testing process before taking the exam in the test center.

NOTE: When you register for a test, you are reserving 2 hours on a computer. Each test is 90 minutes long, except College Composition which is 120 minutes (see below), leaving 30 minutes for check in and setup. Once you are online, you are directed through a tutorial program, which explains the testing process. Because this is somewhat lengthy, CLEP has produced a Sampler program. You can download this from the CLEP website, CLEP Sampler download (link below). This is a very large file. If you have problems downloading the Sampler, you may go to ILRC, which has several computers with the program installed. You may also order the Official CLEP Study Guide (Study Guide - link below) from the College Board, which will include a Sampler.

Computer based CLEP testing

All CLEP exams are computer-based. Liberty University is an open test center for the CLEP program; we administer all the CLEP exams. Students may request their scores be sent to any institution that accepts CLEP credit. It is the responsibility of the student to verify a school's acceptance of the exam before registering to take it.

**IMPORTANT INFORMATION: COLLEGE COMPOSITION

The exam requires writing two essays that must be graded by CLEP. This procedure occurs about every two weeks. Testing Services has a printed schedule for dates relating to the "cut off dates" for reading and mailing the score reports. Awareness of these dates is highly encouraged and can help students with plans.

VERY IMPORTANT:

Click here for difference between College Composition and College Composition Modular.

RETAKING AN EXAM

YOU MUST WAIT AT LEAST SIX MONTHS BEFORE RETAKING AN EXAM.
THIS IS A CLEP REQUIREMENT.

RESTRICTIONS

For Liberty University Only: No credit may be granted for a MATH test that is prerequisite material for a course that has already been completed with a grade of "C" or better.

Graduating Seniors must take the exams and Liberty must receive their scores before the beginning of their final semester.

DESCRIPTION OF EXAMS (see link below)

* CLEP computer-based exams are composed of multiple-choice questions.
* The total time allowed is 90 minutes, except College Composition.
* There are no scheduled rest breaks.
* No personal calculators are permitted. Exams requiring calculator use have a calculator in the computer program itself. These exams are Chemistry, College Algebra, College Math, and Trigonometry.
* After you take the exam, your instant score report is provided to you right away. The only exception to instant scoring is the College Composition, for which results are sent after the essay is scored by ETS.

For more detailed information about the exams and their content areas, please visit the College Board web site at CLEP Test Descriptions (below). In addition to the CLEP study guide (Study Guide - link below), CLEP now offers individual exam study guides that can be downloaded from the net for a fee (Individual Study guides- link below).
