Entrepreneur Scott Jones, founder of multiple companies and organizations under the Premiere Companies brand, spoke to Liberty University students in the Small Business Entrepreneurship (BUSI 435) class on Wednesday, October 24, 2012.
One of Mr. Jones’ projects under development has been adopted by one of the student teams in the class, and will be used by the Liberty University Enactus student organization (formerly SIFE – Students Interested in Free Enterprise) for its upcoming competitions in the spring and possibly the summer next year.
Mr. Jones was involved in the construction industry before starting his career as a successful entrepreneur. Some of the advice given by Mr. Jones was that successful entrepreneurs have a passion for what they are involved in and learn to share that passion with others so that they are willing to partner with the entrepreneur in achieving the goals of the enterprise.
He quoted General Douglas MacArthur when he stated, “There is no security, only opportunity.”
Another statement from Mr. Jones was that life offers degrees from two schools: SHK and SMU – School of Hard Knocks and Sidewalk University. “When the subject comes to you in life, so does the test at the same time,” said Jones.
Successful entrepreneurs have credibility with their stakeholders (investors, partners, clients, etc.). Another key success factor of entrepreneurs, according to Jones, is coachability – being able to accept direction from others and listen to constructive criticism.
Jones played football as a fullback and defensive end for his alma mater Francis Marion University, and has coached football since his college days. Jones further stated that, “Value is not what you have (in terms of possessions), but what you have become through the process of achieving it. The process of setting goals and then pursuing goals is what it will make of you to achieve it.”
Students from the class were very appreciative of hearing from a successful entrepreneur and asked many questions during Mr. Jones’ presentation. The class is scheduled to hear from two additional guest entrepreneurs before the end of the semester: Dr. Michael Hart, a Liberty University School of Business professor, and Mr. Bud Cason, founder of Bud’s Best Cookies from Birmingham, Alabama.
The Entrepreneurship class is operated in conjunction with the Liberty University Center for Entrepreneurship and is open to undergraduate students from any school and discipline who are interested in starting a business or organization someday. The spring class will be offered on MWF, 8:50-9:40AM.
