Dr. Kompelien has been a member of Liberty University’s faculty since 1986. While attending the University of Kansas he placed twice in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in Kansas City. He received high acclaim for his portrayal of Olin Blitch in Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah. Since arriving at Liberty.
Dr. Kompelien is active in the professional opera field, with leads in fourteen major opera productions to his credit. Among these roles are Shaunard in La Boheme, Sparafucile in Rigoletto, and Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia. Dr. Kompelien founded the Liberty Opera Workshop in 1988 and has directed over fifteen productions during that time. He is also director of the Chamber Singers, a small select choral ensemble specializing in advanced choral repertoire.
Dr. Kompelien is a past President of the Virginia District of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. He has sponsored numerous category winners at State and Regional NATS conferences and many of his students have successfully pursued graduate studies in vocal performance.
Most recently, Dr. Kompelien appeared as bass-baritone soloist with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra in two performances of Handel's Messiah, Part I.
