The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers students the opportunity to work in the department as a Secretarial Assistant, a Teacher’s Assistant, and a Lab Assistant in the foods and nutrition lab or the clothing and textiles lab. Students interested in serving in any of these capacities should contact the Department secretary for further information.

Student Workers must qualify for the work-study program which is based on the FASFA report. The Office of Human Resources (434-582-7330) is available to assist students in determining their eligibility.

 

Qualifications For:

 

Secretarial Assistant:

* Computer skills ( i.e. Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Outlook, Excel))
* "Friendly" phone voice and student/teacher friendly
* Receptionist skills
* Pleasant personality

 

Clothing Lab Assistant:

* Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Outlook, Excel)
* Willing to type, grade, and proctor tests and examinations
* Knowledgeable in the Sewing/Textiles area of Family and Consumer Sciences
* Must have completed FACS 220: Design and Construction I
* Willing to help with Sewing/Textiles labs
* Must be available some evenings to monitor evening labs near the end of the semester

 

Foods Lab Assistant:

* Must own a car
* Trustworthy with money and able to keep accurate records
* Have completed FACS 230: Food Science and Management
* Able to give guidance to lab students
* Able to help with Foods Lab
* Shop for Food Lab supplies
* Grade, Record, and help fulfill Office Duties
