Residential Undergraduate Faculty

Dr. Deanna Britt, RN, PhD

Chair, Department of Nursing
Dr. Deanna Britt

I began my tenure at Liberty in 1986. First as a faculty member and then Department Chair in 1995. I earned my BSN at Liberty University, my MSN at University of Virginia and my PhD at Virginia Tech.  Go hokies! Prior to teaching at Liberty, I was a staff nurse at Centra Health working in PACU, OPD and Pediatrics.

I was born in Maine and grew up in Michigan and Connecticut before moving to Virginia at the end of my high school years. I have lived in Lynchburg since 1970 and raised my four children here.

My life verse is Phil. 3:10 – “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in death.”  This is the passion of my life…to know and walk with God, not just in external behaviors, but in my heart.

I love working at Liberty because the students are earnest and dedicated and their is a wonderful collegial relationship with the nursing faculty and staff.

I am a transplanted Yankee, born and raised in Michigan, the oldest of five children. This is my second go-round in Lynchburg. I came originally in 1989 to attend the new Liberty University Nursing Program. After graduation with our first class, I went directly into the ER, where I’ve been actively practicing in various places around the world ever since. I received my MSN from UT-Houston Health Science Center, specializing as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner.

In the past, I’ve worked as a certified medical assistant and phlebotomy technician, in manufacturing and electronics. I spent nine years in the US Air Force (not as a nurse) and responded to the Lord’s call to salvation while stationed in Spain! I left Lynchburg in 1994 to spend two years nursing in Saudi Arabia only to return to Lynchburg in 2000, joining the Liberty University Nursing family in January 2002.

I LOVE working with all four levels of our students, and am BLESSED beyond measure to see how our LORD takes them from called students to skilled grads, bound to work as His hands and feet in the nations. Praise God that He uses my broken pieces for His glory in this way!

I was born in Buffalo, New York, to a family that was in the military, and therefore moved frequently. I was raised on the east coast, but spent most of my time in Petersburg, Virginia. My educational pursuits through high school were lackluster at best, and this earned me a hitch on the military ending up in the Coast Guard. While in the Coast Guard, some neighbors dragged me to a cantata at their church and the gospel was clearly presented and I accepted Jesus Christ to be my Lord and savior. I still consider myself a work in progress.  A few years after that, about 30 years ago, we moved to Lynchburg.

I spent a number of years working at “jobs” that were typically underpaid, as well as unrewarding. They certainly weren’t worthy of the term “career”. I was working at the local shoe company, when they were put out of business by foreign competition. I found that there was a program for retraining that paid not only the tuition, but a stipend to live on. I went to a diploma school, then to Liberty for my undergraduate degree. Once I had the BSN, I was encouraged not only to pursue the Master’s degree, but to become adjunct faculty. All of this while working full-time on our new progressive cardiac unit. I opened that unit at LGH.

I didn’t sleep much, but I found the students to be as much fun and as big a challenge as working on the unit. Overall, I have been an R.N. for over 25 years, worked on PCU for 24 years, and been faculty for 14 years with 10 of those years being full time.

The thing that I enjoy most about the job is when the students “get the AHA Moment”. That is when all the information that we have been trying to pack into their craniums, suddenly “clicks”. Then we can watch the student come on the floor with the attitude “I’ve GOT this”, and after graduation proceed with professionalism and competence on their career path.

I am very excited to be working at Liberty University and help college-age students grow into wonderful, Christ-centered nurses!  I have been working with Liberty University since 2004 in the position of clinical instructor and since 2009 as a full time faculty member.  I have taught a variety of courses including Pathophysiology, Nursing Assessment, Fundamentals of Nursing, Leadership & Management in Nursing and Community Health nursing.  I am passionate about overseas medical work and have traveled to over a dozen countries.  Most recently I have taken students to encounter medical-missions to Senegal, Congo-Brzzaville and Togo, W. Africa.

Other things I enjoy include church ministry, biking, hiking, photography and spending time with friends and family.  I am challenged daily to seek Christ and his ongoing wisdom, understanding and direction each step of the way.  I am thrilled to work with such great faculty and staff in the nursing department and am blessed beyond measure!

Dr. Lynne´ Sanders, RN, MSN, Ed.D

Associate Professor of Nursing

I began my nursing career in 1983 with an RN diploma from the Lynchburg
General Marshall Lodge Hospital’s School of Nursing. I went on to receive my BSN from Liberty University and my MSN from the University of Virginia.  I started working at Liberty in 1992 and in 2003 made a firm move to continue teaching.  I finished my EdD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Sarasota.  I’ve always loved psychosocial aspects of nursing and enjoyed enriching my nursing knowledge with a counseling degree.

My first love, however, will always be nursing.  My goal in teaching is to pass my love for nursing on to my students.  I've enjoyed working with graduate students for the past few years and hearing about the great things they are doing for patients!  It is especially rewarding to hear how graduate students are using nursing to minister to their patients and show the love of Christ.

I worked in critical care for 20 plus years in a variety of settings.  I enjoy the challenge and intense relationship with patients that the critical care setting affords.  I enjoy getting to know patients as well as their families and feeling that I really helped them through a stressful time in life.  In addition to critical care, I've worked with hospice patients.  I found working with patients at the end of live very meaningful and a true ministry.

I've been married to Ron Sanders since 1983 and we have two grown children.  We also live with two canine 'children'.  My husband does canine search and rescue work.  His canine 'partners' live with us and keep us amused and busy.   My hobbies include electronic puzzles, collecting minatures, scrapbooking, making greeting cards, and molding decorative candy.  One of my favorite passages is Hebrews 12:1-2

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and let us run with perserverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

In July 2008 I began working for Liberty.  I am lead faculty for NURS 200 and Assessment Coordinator.  Previously I worked as an adjunct for Lynchburg College.  I continue to work in the Birth Center at Virginia Baptist Hospital where I have worked since 1997.

I received my BSN in 1997 and my MSN in 2004 from University of Virginia. I was certified in Inpatient Obstetrics in 2005.  I have a personal interest in diabetes in pregnancy and fetal loss bereavement.

I spent my childhood in Rustburg, Va and have lived in the Lynchburg area my entire life.  I am married to a wonderful, Godly man, John.  We've been married since 2002.  God has blessed us with our son, Brayden, who is the light of our lives.

I love working in an environment with brothers and sisters in Christ.

I have a  Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Radford University with a focus in performing arts (ballet).

I married the love of my life right after college and have been married for almost 16 years now.  After moving up and down the east coast with my husband’s work, we have now been settled in Lynchburg, VA for the past 5 years.  I am the mother of 2 adventurous boys ages 7 and 9 who are total opposites in every way!  One of our favorite things to do as a family in the cooler months is to settle in at a local coffee shop and sip on coffee (hot chocolate for the boys) while playing cards.  We are active in small groups and serving at our church where I am continually in awe at the way God is moving.

I was a stay at home mom for 10 years (and loved it!) prior to coming to work here at Liberty.  I am truly blessed and thankful that the Lord chose this department and group of co-workers for me!

I am married to a military man and during the first 10 years of our marriage we spent a lot of time moving.  We moved to Lynchburg 13 years ago settled down and now call this our home.

I am in awe of God’s creativity and beauty each morning as I come to work in “The Hill City”.  Sometimes there is snow on the mountains and other times they have a purple hue from the way the sun shines on them.  What a way to start the day!

We have three sons, two of whom are Liberty graduates, and our youngest will graduate in 2014.  I have worked at Liberty University for almost three years.

I process the applications for students wanting to enter the Nursing Program.  I also track immunizations and other requirements for the students during their time in the program.  Because of my responsibilities I have the privilege of getting to know them and having them drop in to just say hi or let me know what is going on in their lives.  This is one of the reason I enjoy my job so much.  Another reason is the people I get to work with in our department.  We have a great group!

I spent my childhood in the idyllic town of Andover, Maine.  I moved to the great state of Virginia in 1978.  God opened the door for my family to move to Lynchburg in 2009 and we are beyond blessed to be included as a small part of God's plan here in Lynchburg and Liberty University.

Out of high school I studied Interior Design at Northern Virginia Community College and worked in the field designing builders model homes in Northern and Fredericksburg, VA.

I am a self taught graphic and web designer and an aspiring innkeeper.

My main roles in the Department of Nursing are Faculty Support, Hiring Logistics, Finance, and Web Support.

I love Liberty University and I love the people I work with in the Department of Nursing.  My work colleagues are gracious, servants of Christ, with incredible work ethic and integrity!
