The Liberty University men’s basketball team won seven of their last nine games of the 2011-12 season. Head Coach Dale Layer is looking to build upon that momentum for the 2012-13 season, with three of last year’s top players returning: Antwan Burrus, John Caleb Sanders, and Tavares Speaks. The Flames also welcome seven new faces to the hardwood.
This season’s schedule is highlighted by the Flames’ first-ever matchup against national powerhouse Georgetown at the Legends Classic. In addition to the 16-game Big South Conference schedule, the Flames will host an ESPN BracketBusters contest and face in-state rivals Richmond and William & Mary.
Meanwhile, the Lady Flames were recently tapped as the pre-season favorite to win another Big South Conference Championship. Last season, Liberty went 24-9 and captured its 14th Big South title in the last 16 seasons.
The Lady Flames will have a challenging start to the 2012-13 season, including a preseason appearance at the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), and games at each of the last two NCAA Division I national champions, Baylor and Texas A&M. Contests versus local rivals James Madison and VCU will also help prepare Head Coach Carey Green’s squad for its 18 Big South Conference tilts.
The Flames and Lady Flames will play a combined 29 home games at the Vines Center this season. The Flames have their first home game on Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m., which is preceded by their first-ever Fan Fest, a pregame celebration including inflatable bouncers, live music, and concession venders. The whole event, including game admission, is free! The Lady Flames host their first home game on Tuesday, Nov 27 at 7 p.m. View the complete Liberty Flames game schedules online.
